Many families who arrange a funeral service find the need for specialized services. Please contact us if you have any questions or particular needs unique to your family. While we can accommodate most any request, below is a short list of the more commonly utilized “alternative” services.
Private family viewings are available. Please ask one of our staff about setting up a private viewing for your family prior to cremation.
A Memorial Service is the same as a traditional service, except the body is not present for the visitation or the funeral.
Direct Burial occurs when a loved one’s body is buried shortly after death in a casket selected. No viewing or visitation is involved. A memorial service may be held at the church, graveside, or a later date. Direct burial usually costs less than the "traditional," full-service funeral. Costs include the funeral home's basic services fee; transportation from a loved one’s place of death to the funeral home; embalming (if required or expressively approved); and the use of staff if a service is desired. The costs of a casket, outer burial container and other miscellaneous outside funeral related expenses must also be factored in (i.e., opening and closing charge at the cemetery, obituary expense, death certificate costs, etc.).
Limited Graveside Service is designed for those who want an earth burial or interment of cremains with a service only at the cemetery. Itemized options may be selected at the family's discretion.
Limited Family Viewing with Shipment is designed for those who want a private family viewing, but no other visitation prior to shipment of the casketed remains. Itemized options are also available to the family.
Ship-in Services are for those who want remains shipped to Hartquist Funeral Home for their final services. Itemized options are available.
Traditional Ship-out allows you to select the type of services and merchandise for services locally. Once the services here have concluded, the remains will be shipped out of town for final services.
Direct Ship-out occurs when there is to be no local service and the remains are to be shipped to a funeral home out of town.
Disinterment/Re-interment allows a family to move their loved one from one cemetery to another.

Embalming Policy
Although law does not require embalming, embalming may be necessary if you select certain funeral arrangements, such as a funeral with a viewing. If you do not want embalming, you have the right to choose an arrangement which does not require you to pay for it, such as direct cremation or immediate burial. In the State of Minnesota, a deceased’s human body must be embalmed by a licensed mortician in the following circumstances:
| |
- if the body will be transported by public transportation;
- if final disposition will not be accomplished within 72 hours after death
or release of the body by a competent authority with jurisdiction over
the body or the body will be lawfully stored for final disposition in the
future, except as provided in section 149A.94, subdivision 1;
- if the body will be publicly viewed; or
- is so ordered by the Commissioner of Health for the control of
infectious disease and the protection of the public health.
