Amy Uilk

AMY UILK was born to Carl and Martina (Monserud) Ring on March 8, 1921 in Ihlen, Minnesota. When she was a young girl she attended Ihlen elementary school and then Pipestone High School. When she graduated from high school in 1938, she continued her education at the Minneapolis Business College. After completion, she returned to Pipestone and worked for Demaray Hardware. In August, 1942, she enlisted in the Women’s Army Corp. in Fort Des Moines, Iowa. She attended Bakers and Cook School in the service and then went to Fort Sheridan, Illinois to cook in the 5th company. On December 25, 1943, she was united in marriage to Jack Edward Nissenbaum in Waukegan, Illinois. In March, 1944, she was discharged from the W.A.A.C. While her husband was serving with the Army, Amy moved with her son to Wauwatosa, Wisconsin where she was employed as a secretary at Milwaukee County Hospital. She divorced and in 1947 returned to Pipestone and worked for the REA until 1953 when she married Elmer Uilk in Faribault, Minnesota. Following their marriage, they resided in Ihlen. In August, 1954, they purchased a home in Pipestone; and in 1961, Amy went back to work for REA until 1983 when she retired. Elmer preceded her in death in 1979. After his death, she continued to live in Pipestone. On February 16, 2012, she became a resident at the Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone. She died there on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at the age of 91 years, two months and 23 days.

Amy was a charter member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Pipestone. She was also a member of the Pipestone Senior Citizens. She loved to read and to play Scrabble.

She is lovingly remembered by her two daughters, Dianne Uilk of Park Rapids, Minnesota, and Darlene Stueven and her husband Ronald of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; granddaughter, Kelly Coffman and her husband Rich; twin great-grandsons, Kaleb and Kaden Roach, and one great-granddaughter, Grace Coffman, all of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; daughter-in-law, Natalie Nissenbaum of Pipestone, Minnesota; two nieces; two nephews; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband (1979); her son, Jack Nissenbaum (2007); her parents; one brother, George Ring (1990); and her grandson-in-law, Robert Roach (2006).
