Anna Hess

ANNA HESS was born to Henry and Edith (LaFrance) Bertrand on March 1, 1920 on the family farm near Bathgate, North Dakota where she was raised and attended country school. She continued her education at Bathgate High School. After she graduated in 1938, she completed nine months of nursing training. On April 12, 1939, she was united in marriage to Amos William Demars. Following their marriage, they farmed near Bathgate, North Dakota until 1950 when they moved to Pipestone, Minnesota. After moving to Pipestone, Anna was employed at Geyermans, S & L Department Store, Matson Drug Store and later at Luksik Drug. Her husband preceded her in death on January 17,1979. After his death, she continued to live and work in Pipestone. She also worked at the Pipestone County Nursing Unit until she became employed at the Good Samaritan Home in Pipestone. She worked there until her retirement in March of 1980. On April 12, 1980, she was united in marriage to Leo V. Hess. Following their marriage, they resided at Leo's farm southwest of Pipestone. On October 27, 2010, she became a resident at the Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone where she recently went under hospice care. She died at the Good Samaritan Communities on Friday, March 25, 2011, at the age of 91 years and 24 days.

Anna was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church in rural Pipestone. She enjoyed crocheting afghans for all of her grandchildren. She was also an avid reader.

She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Leo V. Hess of Pipestone, Minnesota; three children, Jerry Demars and his wife Vera of Walker, Minnesota, Edith 'Louise' Appeldorn and her husband Harold of Pipestone, Minnesota, and Karen Peterson and her husband Jerry of Grand Blanc, Michigan; 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; five stepchildren Leo Hess, Jr., and his wife Pam of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Paul Hess and his wife Candi of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Mary Jane Keller and her husband David of Park Rapids, Minnesota, Dean Hess and his wife Marcie of Clear Lake, Iowa, and Robert Hess and his wife Becky of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 12 step-grandchildren; and 4-1/2 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Amos Demars; one granddaughter, Nicole Peterson and three sisters, Lorraine Barard, Theresa Demaine and Yvonne McDowall.
