Elizabeth "Betty" Ebsen

September 13, 1922 — July 17, 2017

Elizabeth “Betty” Jeannette Ebsen was born September 13, 1922 to Theodor and Katie (Arends) Meyer in Trosky, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Trosky. Betty graduated from Pipestone High School and had worked several different jobs prior to marriage. Betty married the love of her life – Wayne Ebsen and their union was blessed with a loving family of six children. They worked hard to raise their six children and lived in the same home since 1955. She worked many years as the Ward Secretary at Pipestone County Hospital until her retirement in 1987. She loved her work and took great pride in a job well done. She made lifelong friendships at the hospital. She was also the “secretary” for Jane and Terri’s Prom Garter business for the past 10 years and inspected every garter. Wayne died on January 25, 2013. Betty entered the care of Pipestone County Hospice House on June 16, 2017 where she died on Monday, July 17, 2017 at the age of 94 years.

Betty was a longtime member of St. Paul Lutheran in Pipestone. She enjoyed the worship service on the radio the last few years. Her faith was unshakeable and she welcomed going to her true home to be with her Lord and Savior. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed making wonderful meals for her family. She especially enjoyed baking Christmas cookies and continued that tradition through this past Christmas. She loved a good mystery (especially Forensic Anthropology) and continued to read on a NOOK when her eye sight made even large print library books hard to read. She was housebound for the past five years and loved reading to fill the hours. She loved the quote – “Reading gives us a place to go when we have to stay where we are.” She liked modern technology and also used the computer to play cards and check her power ball numbers. She loved playing and winning any kind of game with her children and grandchildren. She loved puzzles – jigsaw and crosswords. Betty was an avid Minnesota Twins fan, but would abruptly turn the game off when they weren’t playing well. She also loved watching “Dancing with the Stars”, and was a huge Derek fan. She collected bells, and has a collection of Lenox Crystal that she loved. She was a great storyteller and her memory amazed everyone. Betty was proud of her children and grandchildren, and could recall all the birthdates. She treasured their visits and loved to be kept informed of everyone’s accomplishments and goals.

Betty will be lovingly remembered by her five children, Gail (and Ron) Abbink of Baltic, South Dakota, Dean (and Carol Douty) Ebsen of Royalton, Minnesota, Karen Sorensen of Alvin, Texas, Terri (and Franklin) Petersen of Windom, Minnesota, Jane (and Larry) Gorter of Pipestone, Minnesota; son-in-law, Harold Hess (and fianc Dianne Karlstad) of Luverne, Minnesota; 17 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne; daughter, Linda Kay Hess; parents, Theodor and Katie; brother, Ted Meyer; sisters Dorothea Beach and Darlene Corrado. Blessed and eternal be the memory of Elizabeth “Betty” Ebsen.
