Gordon Bauman

GORDON BAUMAN was born to John and Edna (Schlapkohl) Bauman on January 21, 1920 in Jasper, Minnesota. He was baptized on February 20, 1920 and confirmed on March 25, 1934 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jasper. He was raised near Jasper where he also attended school. Upon completion of his education, he farmed with his parents until he was drafted into the military. On October 5, 1941, he entered the U.S. Army and served during World War II in the South Pacific and was awarded the Philippine Liberation Medal with bronze star. After his discharge from the service on October 3, 1945, he returned to this area and started farming north of Jasper. On April 4, 1948, he was united in marriage to Beryl Nerison at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jasper. Following their marriage, they farmed in Moody County, South Dakota for five years. They then farmed his parents' farm. In 1974, they moved into Jasper where Gordon worked as an insurance agent for 17 years. On December 13, 2010, he entered the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne, Minnesota where he died on Sunday, October 2, 2011 at the age of 91 years, eight months and 11 days.

Gordon was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Jasper and served on the church board as financial secretary and elder. He was also a member of the Oscar Iverson American Legion Post where he served as commander for three years and was on the rifle squad. He was a Director of Sweet Township Mutual Insurance, and he was active in 4-H as a member and a leader.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Beryl Bauman of Jasper, Minnesota; three children, Mark Bauman and his friend Kathryn Rutledge of Bloomington, Illinois, Marla Hawes and her husband Arlen of Crooks, South Dakota, and Keith Bauman and his wife Renae of Yankton, South Dakota; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four siblings, Lavon Michaelson of Hastings, Minnesota, Walter Bauman and his wife Bette of Jasper, Minnesota, Marjorie Braken and her husband Daniel of Redwood Falls, Minnesota, and Alvin Bauman and his wife Marlene of Jasper, Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter; his parents; one brother-in-law; and two nephews.
