Marian Matthiesen

December 7, 1929 — February 16, 2015

MARIAN DOROTHY MATTHIESEN was born to Emil and Anna (Shellum) Paulson on December 7, 1929 in Dell Rapids, South Dakota. She was raised on a farm near Sherman, South Dakota and attended country school through the eighth grade. Upon completion of her education, she helped at home and also worked at Windy's Cafe in Jasper. On March 5, 1949, she was united in marriage to Veryl Matthiesen at the American Lutheran Church in Jasper. Following their marriage, they moved to a farm near Ruthton, Minnesota. One year later, they returned to the Jasper area and continued to farm there. During this time, Marian worked at Blue Mound Inn in Luverne, Minnesota for a few years and then Palisade Manor in Garretson, South Dakota. In 1983, they retired and moved into Jasper. In 1990, Marian became employed by the Pipestone County Medical Center in the Home Health Department where she worked for 18 years. The Keyes family was one of the many families she cared for. Veryl preceded her in death on April 5, 2007. After his death, Marian continued to live in Jasper. On January 29, 2015, she was admitted to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. On February 3, 2015, she was transferred to the Avera Dells Area Hospital in Dells Rapids, South Dakota where she remained until her death on Monday, February 16, 2015 at the age of 85 years, two months and nine days.

Marian was a member of the Jasper Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the Quarry Lions Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards, especially pinnochle. She also enjoyed being out and about. She taught her grandchildren to drive and enjoyed attending their sporting events, as well as her children’s. She loved to entertain her family for meals and especially loved all the little baby great-grandchildren.

She is lovingly remembered by her eight children, Gary Matthiesen and Virginia of Scottsdale, Arizona, Brian Matthiesen and his wife Lorna of Edmond, Oklahoma, Gaylene Bleyenberg of Flandreau, South Dakota, Greg Matthiesen and his wife Cindy of Jasper, Minnesota, Keith Matthiesen and his wife Sondra 'Sonny' of Hartford, South Dakota, Brad Matthiesen and his wife Janet of Sherman, South Dakota, Kevin Matthiesen of Jasper, Minnesota, and Sharon Peterson and her husband Bill of Jasper, Minnesota; 19 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her son, Michael; her parents; and one brother, Virgil Paulson.
