Shirley Papik

May 9, 1930 — July 16, 2017

SHIRLEY ANN PAPIK was born on May 9, 1930 to Clarence and Alma (Rogge) Hamre in Mobridge, South Dakota. She was named after a famous young star at the time, Shirley Temple. She attended school and later graduated from high school in Mobridge. Shirley then furthered her education at Yankton College in Yankton, South Dakota. During this time, she lived in the home of Dr. and Mrs. Auld where she also worked as a nanny and housekeeper for their young family.

One very special evening, Shirley and some friends were at a restaurant and noticed three very good looking young men sitting at a nearby table. She took special interest of one of them. He took notice of her as well and the rest became a part of their history. On August 6, 1950, Shirley was united in marriage to Emil Papik in Yankton. They moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota and then later to Sioux City, Iowa for Emil’s employment as a meat grader for the United States Department of Agriculture. In 1964, they moved to Luverne, Minnesota where they made their permanent home and raised their family. Shirley’s career was her family. She was blessed to raise her children and provided them with a caring home. Emil preceded her in death on June 20, 1986. Later in life Shirley became a resident at the Oaks, Poplar Creek Estate and the Good Samaritan Society – Mary Jane Brown Home. She greatly enjoyed the friends and staff at all of these communities.

On Sunday, July 16, 2017, Shirley died peacefully surrounded by her family at the Sanford Luverne Hospice Cottage at the age of 87 years, two months and seven days.

Shirley was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Luverne. She had many talents throughout the years, including the love of cooking for her family, baking, cake decorating and sewing doll clothes. She enjoyed playing cards, Scrabble, video games, listening to music and singing, putting together puzzles and bowling. Though she was a kind person, Shirley hated to lose at anything and was very competitive. She will be remembered by many for the example of love and devotion for which she showed her family and others.

Shirley is lovingly remembered by her three children, Gary (Janine) Papik of Luverne, Marilyn (Robert) Hoffman of Lesterville, South Dakota, Jean (Troy) Faber of Rochester, Minnesota; seven grandkids, Heidi (Micky) Sehr, Gretchen (Ryan) Jepperson, Jordan (Emily) Papik, Cherie Hoffman, Nick (Addie) Faber, Morgan Faber and Ross Faber; and 11 great-grandkids, Casey and Carter Sehr, Christian, Holden, Reagan and Slaten Jepperson, Augusta, Marcus, Chandler and Braelinn Papik, and Quinn Faber; and other family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emil; sister, Grace Gorder; and four brothers, Howard, Al, Bob and Charles Hamre.
