Verona Weets

June 17, 1922 — June 20, 2016

Verona Gertrude Selma Weets…

was born on June 17, 1922 to John and Lydia (Lange) Peterson on the family farm in Sweet Township of Pipestone County, Minnesota where she was raised and attended country school through eighth grade. On July 12, 1941, she was united in marriage to Henry Jerry Weets in Lawton, Oklahoma. While Henry was away in the service, Verona resided with her parents and then moved to Pipestone. When Henry returned from the service, the family moved to Henry’s parents’ farm northwest of Jasper, Minnesota where the couple farmed side by side. Verona helped in all aspects from milking and feeding the animals to gardening and canning, along with being a homemaker. She took pride in making sure anyone who visited was taken care of and well fed. After Henry passed away on January 13, 1975, she moved into town and began working as an activities assistant at the Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone for ten years. She would also help with caring for the grandkids when needed. She formally retired in 1985. She began traveling all over the United States and abroad. She was “Grandma on the go”. In the early 1980s, she helped care for her son, Allen who was diagnosed with a brain tumor until his passing on February 14, 1986. She continued traveling, spending time with her ladies’ groups and remaining active in her church and with her family. In October, 2015, she entered the Pipestone County Hospice House where she received loving care from the staff there. She remained under their care until she went to be with her Lord on Monday, June 20, 2016 at the age of 94 years.

Verona was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Jasper where she was baptized as an infant and confirmed on May 31, 1936. She taught and played the piano for Sunday School for 16 years. She was also a member of the Helping Hands Club through her church, the Eden Jolly Union Neighborhood Club, and the American Legion Auxilliary of Pipestone. Verona enjoyed growing flowers, sewing, gardening, and fishing. She also enjoyed cooking, baking and taking lunches to the field.

She is lovingly remembered by two sons, David (Shirley) Weets of Murdock, Minnesota and Steve (Joann) Weets of Pipestone, Minnesota; one daughter-in-law, Pat Weets of Pipestone; ten grandchildren, Jaimie, Tami, Lara, Becky, Tanya, Nathan, Aaron, Andy, Kelly and Damian; ten great-grandchildren, Ciara, Braylee, Skylar, Silje, Ava, Sylus, Izzy, Thorin, Finn and Harper; two sisters, Erna Wendt of Fergus Falls, Minnesota and Doris Greengo of Eagan, Minnesota; one sister-in-law, Lorraine Peterson of Alexandria, Minnesota; other family; and her special friend, Judy Stubbe of Pipestone. She is preceded in death by her husband; her son, Allen; her parents; and three brothers, Marvin, Herbert and Elvin.

May her legacy be “love.”
