Adelaide Janssen

Adelaide Emila Janssen was born to Louis and Gurine (Herreid) Lorentson on April 5, 1917 in Trent, South Dakota. In 1918, she moved with her parents to Seattle, Washington for a few years. The family later returned back to Flandreau, South Dakota in 1921 where she was raised. After her graduation from Flandreau High School, she attended Sioux Valley School of Nursing in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. When she completed her training, she worked at hospitals in Estherville, Iowa, Los Angeles, California and finally at the Pipestone Hospital. On June 9, 1943, she was united in marriage to John Peters at St. Martin Catholic Church in Woodstock, Minnesota. Following their marriage, they lived and farmed near Woodstock where they also raised their family. John preceded her in death in October of 1969. After his death, Adelaide continued to live on the farm until 1971 when she moved to Pipestone, Minnesota. On April 26, 1974, she was united in marriage to Merle Janssen at St. Leo Catholic Church in Pipestone. Following their marriage, they lived in Pipestone. Merle preceded her in death in 1988. After his death, she continued to live in Pipestone. She entered into the Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone in January of 2013 and resided there until she passed away on Monday, April 3, 2017, just two days short of her 100th Birthday.

Adelaide was baptized and confirmed at Messiah Lutheran Church in Trent. While living on the farm, she was a member of St. Martin Catholic Church where she was also active in the Ladies Guild and Circle. She was currently a member of St. Leo Catholic Church in Pipestone. She enjoyed spending her time gardening, doing crafts, bowling, water aerobics, walking, reading and playing cards. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family.

She is lovingly remembered by her five children, Loren Peters and his wife Betty of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Bruce Peters and his wife Christine of Prior lake, Minnesota, Karen Janssen and her husband Richard of Sherwood, Oregon, Paul Peters of Burnsville, Minnesota, and John Peters of Marshall, Minnesota; her stepson, Robert Janssen and his wife Ellen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 17 grandchildren, Debra Waite, Kathy Gehrels, Jodi Boers, Stacy Peters Henning, David Peters, Michael Peters, Lisa Kauffman, Richard Janssen, Laurie Wheeler, Joshua Peters, Erin Buchingham, Tangela Peters, Anthony Peters, Heather Peters, Tiffani Mix, Jackie Jasper and Judy Kent; 24 great-grandchildren, Lauren Waite, Logan Waite, Kaitlyn Gehrels, Ketsie Gehrels, Karsten Peters, Owen Peters, Isaac Peters, Joseph Kauffman, Joslyn Gastiaburu, Tyler Gastiaburu, Hayley Peters, Jaden Buckingham, Danessa Buckingham, Tahlia Buckingham, Duke Diagne, Emma Peters, Stephen Peters, Jocelyn Peters, Keegan Mix, Karson Mix, Kolton Mix, Korbin Mix, Kaiden Mix, and Knolan Mix. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Peters; her husband, Merle Janssen; her son, Gary Peters; her parents; one brother, Howard Lorentson; and two sisters, Sylvia Doescher and Lorna Lorentson.
