Adele Nissen

ADELE FRUEN NISSEN, 93, of Wessington Springs died Thursday, January 27, 2011 at Avera Weskota Manor. A Memorial Service will be at 2:00 P.M, Friday, February 4, 2011 at United Church of Christ Fellowship Hall with fellowship time 2:30-4:00. A Memorial Service will be at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Hartquist Funeral Chapel, Pipestone, MN. Burial will be at Old Woodlawn Cemetery, Pipestone, MN.

Adele Nissen was born to Robert and Grace (Morrison) Fruen on July 12, 1917 in Komensky, McLeod County, Minnesota. While growing up, she and her family lived in Sioux Falls, Oldham, Mobridge, Presho, and Beresford, South Dakota. She competed on the debate team reaching the state level. After graduation from Beresford High School she attended the University of Minnesota for one year, and worked in Minneapolis several years. On September 23, 1943, she was united in marriage to Raymond Nissen in Belleville, Illinois. Following their marriage, they resided in several locations when he was stationed state-side in the United States Air Force. Adele worked at Fruen Elevator in Hatfield, MN while Ray was deployed overseas. After his discharge in 1946, they moved to Lane, South Dakota where they owned and operated the Bob Fruen Elevator. Adele participated in community activities, was manager of the Lane Telephone Company and was a Lane School Board member. Following their retirement in 1974, they continued to live in Lane until 2001 when they moved to the Weskota Apartments in Wessington Springs, SD. Ray preceded her in death on June 19, 2002. Adele continued to live at the Weskota apartments until 2008, then moved to Prairie View Assisted Living, Kimball,SD for one year, and resided at Weskota Manor until her death.

For 25 years, Ray and Adele looked forward to their winters in Mesa, Arizona. She enjoyed watercolor painting, playing bridge, cooking, and baking, especially apple crisp and apple pie. She also enjoyed sewing and loved teaching her granddaughters to sew.

She is lovingly remembered by her four children, John Nissen and his wife Marilyn of Woonsocket, SD, David Nissen and his wife Neda of Sioux Falls, SD, Barbara Horsley and her husband Lynn of Wessington Springs, SD and Mary Kohatsu and her husband Neal of Carmichael, CA; five grandchildren, Kari (Horsley) Sanders, Laura (Horsley) Moser, Sarah (Horsley) Larson, Michael Kohatsu, and Lauren Kohatsu; seven great-grandchildren, Megan, Kyle and Ray Sanders, Mitchell and Bryce Moser, and Blake and Luke Larson; one brother, Bill Fruen of Iowa City, IA.; and one sister, Mary Fruen of Boston, MA. She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Janet Nissen; her parents; sister, LoAnne Fruen; and two brothers, Lomon and Paul Fruen.
