Obituary for Alice A. Kern

ALICE ANN KERN was born on April 20, 1943, to Gustave and Elsie (Giese) Evers on the family farm just west of Lake Benton, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Verdi Township. Growing up on the farm, many fond memories were made while playing with her four older brothers. She participated in 4-H and was proud to display her gardening skills and sewing projects, even having items in the local fashion shows. Alice attended Lake Benton Public School and graduated in 1961. She went on to further her education in nursing school and used her skills as a nursing assistant at the Lake Benton Clinic. Alice was married in 1969, and was blessed with two sons, Anthony in 1970, and Aaron seven years later. They made their first home in Colton, South Dakota and during this time, Alice worked in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in the insurance industry. In 1975, the family relocated to a farm west of Chester, South Dakota. Alice remained hard at work maintaining the farm and livestock as well as the home. In 2008, she returned to her roots in Lake Benton. During her retirement she still kept busy working in the local library for many years, where she had the opportunity to become connected to much of her community. After a brief stay at the Pipestone County Hospice House in Pipestone, Minnesota, Alice died on Monday, September 1, 2020 at the age of 77 years, four months, and 12 days.

Alice was known for being a friendly person. She always had time for others whether they were family, friends, or neighbors. She enjoyed playing cards and was part of a bridge group in Lake Benton, as well as being an alternate in the bridge group in Ivanhoe, Minnesota. Alice was also an avid golfer. Her passion for gardening grew with her into adulthood as she left behind a legacy of tomatoes.

Alice is remembered by her sons, Anthony of Crookston, Minnesota and Aaron of New Orleans, Louisiana; brothers, Donald E. (Diane) Evers of Lake Benton, Minnesota and Norman P. (Diana) Evers of Aurora, South Dakota; sister-in-law, Jan Evers of Jackson, Mississippi; and many cousins and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Dr. Carl G. Evers and Ewald D. (Judy) Evers.
