Alice E. Schmuck

June 3, 1925 — September 12, 2014

ALICE EMMA SCHMUCK was born on June 3, 1925 to August and Lela (Holmes) Hamann in Luverne, Minnesota. She was raised on the farm near Luverne and attended country school through the eighth grade. She then attended Luverne High School and graduated on June 3, 1943. Following her education she went to work as a clerical assistant to Al McIntosh at the Rock County Star Herald. On August 18, 1946 Alice was united in marriage to Kenneth Schmuck at St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne. The couple moved to Ken’s parents’ farm west of Luverne in Springwater Township and began farming. They were blessed with two children. In 1955 the couple purchased a farm on the north edge of Luverne where on March 1, 1956 they moved their young family and Alice continued as a homemaker. When the kids became older, Alice worked as a secretary under Rev. Schmaltz at St. John Luverne for a couple years. She then worked part-time during tax season for the Estenson Company for many years. In December 1990, Alice and Ken moved into Luverne. In July 2004, they moved to Bethany Meadows Senior Living in Brandon, South Dakota. Ken preceded Alice in death on October 19, 2009. Alice continued to reside at Bethany until Friday, September 12, 2014 when she went to be with her Lord at the age of 89 years, three months and nine days.

Alice was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where she was baptized, confirmed, and married by Rev. Houser. During her time in Luverne, she was very active in the church and taught Sunday School and VBS. She and Ken were also active in Couples Club. Earlier in her life, Alice participated in the Farmer’s Union Legislative Fly-In to Washington, D.C., and was also active in PTA. She and Ken enjoyed traveling, which included a trip to Hawaii in 1977 and several bus trips around the country. She especially enjoyed ballroom dancing with her favorite partner, Ken. Most of all, Alice was grateful for family gatherings and was proud of her Christian faith.

Alice will be lovingly remembered by her son, Allen Schmuck and his wife Jan of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; daughter, Karen Widboom and her husband Pat of New Richland, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Andrew Schmuck and his wife Nicolette (and their children, Hudson and Norah) and Michael Widboom and his wife Jennifer (and daughter, Jaedyn); a brother, Dale Hamann of Luverne; and other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Kenneth Schmuck; a grandson, Ryan Schmuck; her parents; and five siblings, Virgil Hamann, Elsie Hemme, Elmer Hamann, Francis Sievert and Irene Hemme.
