Obituary for Althea Stevens
ALTHEA MILDRED STEVENS was born on January 13, 1925 to Paul and Sophia (Enter) Hippauf in Lewiston, Minnesota. While she was still young, the family moved to Mankato, Minnesota. Althea attended school in Mankato and graduated high school. Following her education, she began working for Standard Oil. Althea was united in marriage to the love of her life, Russell “Russ” Stevens on May 28, 1949 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mankato. After their marriage, they moved to Pipestone, Minnesota. The couple was blessed with two children, whom Althea devoted her life to raising. Russ continued to work while Althea cared for their home and the children. Russ preceded Althea in death on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2018. Althea continued to live at Ridge View Estates until a fall brought her to the Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone for rehabilitation. She continued to live there until her passing on Friday, June 12, 2020 at the age of 95 years, four months, and 30 days.
Althea was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pipestone, where she acted as a circle leader, was a member of LWML, taught Sunday school, and brought a love of God to the congregation. They loved playing Bridge and were in several couple’s bridge clubs, she was in several women’s clubs and she also enjoyed painting ceramics. At heart, however, Althea was an outdoors girl. She enjoyed golfing with Russ, gardening, and taking in nature during walks. Above all else, her family was her life; from taxiing her grandchildren and their friends, to attending all of their sporting events, their church and school programs and always giving and doing everything she could for them. Althea enjoyed every minute that she spent with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is lovingly remembered by her children, Mark (Lynn) Stevens of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Nancy Oye of Pipestone; five grandchildren, Angie McConnell, Dan (Alycia) Oye, Nic (Jenny) Stevens, Matt (Mehgan) Oye, and Stacy (Derek) TerWee; seven great-grandchildren, Kaleb McConnell, Gabe Stevens, Tom Stevens, Makenzie Oye, Adilynn Oye, Liam Oye, Emerie Oye; and many loving nieces and nephews. Althea was preceded in death by her husband, Russ; her parents; and her siblings, Gertrude, Esther, Gary, and Edgar.
Memorials may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pipestone or the Good Samaritan Communities – Ridge View Estates in Pipestone.
