Obituary for Alvera Sik

Alvera Sik was born to Henry and Helen (Binnebose) Lang on May 14, 1920 in Pipestone County, Minnesota. Alvera was one of eight children and lived in Minnesota and South Dakota, attending school in Lincoln County, Minnesota. In her youth Alvera did domestic work and baby sitting in area family homes. On August 31, 1938 Alvera was united in marriage to Andrew Sik at St. John Cantius Church in Wilno, Minnesota. Following their marriage they farmed near Canby, Minnesota. In 1945 they purchased a farm in Drammen Township, living there and raising their three children. They sold the farm in the fall of 1976. In February, 1977 Alvera and Andrew moved into Lake Benton, Minnesota. They sold their home in January, 2002 and moved into the Valley Manor Apartments in Lake Benton. Alvera moved into the Hendricks Nursing Home in March of 2010, where on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 she died at the age of 93.

Alvera was a member of St. Genevieve Catholic Church in Lake Benton. She was a loving wife to Andrew who passed away in 2002, a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She looked forward to visits from her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors. In early years she was active in her church and was a member of the Shaokatan Ladies Club. She was a wonderful cook and baker. Her grandchildren say that her cinnamon rolls and fried chicken were the best in the world. She was a beautiful seamstress and a quilter, making dozens of quilts. Alvera enjoyed working in her garden and was known for her beautiful roses. She embroidered many lovely pillow cases and hundreds of dishtowels, many of which were done while she lived in the Hendricks Nursing Home.

Alvera is lovingly remembered by her three children, Donald A. Sik (Jeanne) of Ocheyedan, Iowa, Jeanette (Robert Pierret) of Mankato, Minnesota, and Roger D. Sik (Sandi) of Lake Benton; 13 grandchildren, Scott Sik (Verda), Shawn Sik, Robert A. Pierret, Michelle Sik, Lori Levin (Steven), Tami Pierret, Joel Sik, Kimberly Thompson (Rick), Colin Sik, Corey Sik (Robin), Kelly Sik (Margo), Brad Sik, and Anthony Pierret (Lori); 21 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Norman Lang (Juanita) of Elmira, Oregon; sister-in-law Marcella Lang of Starbuck, Minnesota; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew; her great-granddaughter, Autumn Sik; her parents; three brothers, Millard, Alvin, and Donald Lang; and three sisters, Mildred Gehrts, Alice Trulock, and Helen Klein.

Blessed be her memory.
