ALVINA MAE HUP was born to Albert and Jennie (Korthals) Hoogeveen on December 12, 1932 in Steen, Minnesota. She was baptized at the Steen Reformed Church. Alvina attended school in Steen and graduated from Hills High School in Hills, Minnesota in 1950. On December 3, 1952 Alvina was united in marriage to John Hup Jr. at the Steen Reformed Church. The couple made their first home in Steen, Minnesota, where the young bride stayed when John left for the army just five months later. Upon his return from the Korean War two years later, the couple settled into a busy life on the farm. Together they worked the land and raised their three boys, Steve, Ken and Dave. In 1982, the couple moved to Luverne, Minnesota. Alvina was a homemaker, an active farm wife and also worked at the Luverne Community Hospital; first in house cleaning and later in the purchasing department. In addition, Alvina was a seamstress and made custom suits for Cook’s Clothing. She later worked at Papik Motors in Luverne with filing and delivering vehicles.

On Thursday, December 19, 2019, Alvina died peacefully at the Good Samaritan Communities of Luverne and went to be with her Lord at the age of 87 years and seven days.

Alvina was a longtime member of the Steen Reformed Church where she had been active in Ladies Circle and taught Sunday School. After their move to Luverne, the couple joined the American Reformed Church. Alvina enjoyed spending time with and attending the many activities of her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed sewing, quilting and fishing. Traits of Alvina as her family reflects on her life include: patience, gracious, gentle, integrity, helpful. Above all, she will be remembered as a loving caregiver, woman of integrity and a beautiful person.

Alvina will lovingly be remembered by her husband of 67 years, John of Luverne; two sons, Kenneth and his wife Susan, and David and his wife Teresa, all of Luverne; eight grandchildren, Andrea (Dusty) Kovarna, Lindsay (Steve) Ruda, Mitch (Sara) Hup, Breanne (Jesse) Haller, Matthew (friend, Cori Nath) Hup, Daniel (Maria) Hup, Michael Hup, and Bethany (Cory) Tilstra; eight great-grandchildren, Chase Hup, Eden Haller, Jude Haller, Elijah Haller, Isaac Hup, Emma Tilstra, Braylon Kovarna and Madison Kovarna; three brothers, Alvin (Shirley) Hoogeveen of Hills, Minnesota, Art (Carol) Hoogeveen, and Raymond (Joann) Hoogeveen; daughter-in-law, Debbie Hup Larson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and two sisters-in-law, Gert Hup of Hills, Minnesota, and Inez Hoogeveen of Le Mars, Iowa. Alvina was preceded in death by her son, Steven Hup; parents; Albert and Jennie; brother, Donald Hoogeveen; and brother-in-law, Dick Hup.
