AUDREY MARIE ROTH was born on June 22, 1937, the daughter of Wilkey and Mildred Habben in Tyler Minnesota. She attended country school in Burchard, MN and graduated from Balaton High School in 1955. She learned to cook and bake from her mother, Millie and was a fierce protector of her younger siblings, Lori and Dar. She met her husband, Ron Roth through her sister, Lori while at the roller rink. They started dating while Ron worked at the bowling alley setting pins. They were married on April 25, 1957, in Flandreau, SD and began their life together in Ruthton, MN. They moved to Pipestone, MN in 1959 and raised their four children there. She began an in-home daycare and worked for many years as an administrative assistant at both Hyde Oil and Farm Bureau Insurance before retiring in 1999. Audrey passed away on Monday, February 28, 2022, at the Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone after a long, heartbreaking period of physical and mental decline inflicted on her by Alzheimer’s disease. She was 84 years, eight months, and six days old.

Audrey was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and was actively involved with Bible study and teaching Sunday school. She instilled in her family the importance of dressing up and sitting up straight in church. She attended Red Hat Society events regularly and loved to socialize at the Senior Center coffee sessions in Holland, MN. She was always up for an adventure and loved a good road trip, particularly when it ended with a stop at a drive-in-diner or truck stop with her beloved yorkie dogs, Tina Lina, Copper and Sadie.

She loved to shop! She never left the house without her hair perfectly coiffed, freshly applied lipstick, and a killer purse. She loved to cook and made the best apple pie and gravy bread. She couldn’t get enough of eating fresh tomatoes right out of the garden and was renowned for her frequent trips to the Dari King for a BBQ and ‘ice-cold’ Pepsi. As a true Midwesterner she would remind others that it ‘all depends on the weather’ when making plans. You couldn’t depart without frequent reminders to ‘watch for deer’ and ‘call me when you get there’ to make sure you made it safely. She had a special place in her heart for babies and loved spending time with her grandchildren. She loved to sing church hymns and enjoyed music throughout her life. An annual tradition was cramming everyone in the car to sing Christmas carols and check out all the Christmas lights.

Audrey was well known for her ability to connect with strangers. She always had the coffee pot on and offered a place to stay or hot meal to anyone who needed it. She was an early riser who kept an immaculate house. She was a study in contrasts. She was able to give precise driving directions and was also a notorious backseat driver. She was a great cook, but also loved to eat out, often taking her family through multiple drive thrus as long as they had their orders ready. Long before HGTV, she loved to rearrange or redecorate her home. She was never a fan of taking medicine but didn’t complain about ailments often stating that she was “healthy as a horse”. She believed in knowing where her kids were and who they were with long before cell phones were invented. She wasn’t superstitious but cautioned against sharing a nightmare or dream before breakfast. She always wanted to go to college but didn’t have the opportunity to further her education. Despite that, she was fiercely proud of all her family and cheered on their accomplishments. She had numerous ‘Audrey-isms’- expressions that her family fondly refer to, such as, “thousand dollars to a donut” or “friendly as a mud turtle”. Although she grew up in a traditional era, she was progressive and served as an ally and advocate for others. She was loved and will be dearly missed.

She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Ron Roth of Pipestone; and their children, Cindy (Randy) Jasper of Pipestone, Randy (Judy) Roth of Alpha, MN, Jodi (Nathan) Nelson of Hendricks, MN and Jill (Henry) Kraai of Charles City, IA; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilkey and Mildred Habben; her sister, Delores (Dennis) Mead and her brother, Darwin Habben.

Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.
