Bernadine Margaret Carlson

February 7, 1923 — December 16, 2015

BERNADINE MARGARET CARLSON...

was born in rural Garretson, South Dakota to Mathias John and Frances Theresa (Kuhl) Schreurs. Bernie was raised on the family farm 4 miles west of Garretson where she attended Garretson Country School until the 8th grade. After her education, she moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota with her older sister, Dorothy. Bernie assisted friends and relatives with housekeeping and childcare services. In the 1940’s, she worked at the Garretson Hospital and Morrell’s as a young adult. Bernie also worked for several years at the Garretson Hatchery prior to and after getting married. On November 10, 1953, Bernadine was united in marriage to Arthur Carlson at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Garretson. In 1953, they moved to Pipestone before moving to the Carlson Family Farm. Once married, Bernie raised three children and assisted her husband with the family farm. She moved into Pipestone in 1989. In her later years, Bernie babysat for good friends including the Tim and Mary Anderson family, John and Joyce Schmidt family and the Ken and Rose Nolte family. The last family that Bernie took care of was the dearest to her heart; she had the opportunity to care for two of her grandchildren, Jaden and Jared. In October of 2014, she moved to Edgebrook Care Center in Edgerton, Minnesota where she resided until she died on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at the age of 92 years, 10 months and nine days.

Bernadine was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church in Pipestone where she was involved as treasurer for the PCCW. She was also involved with the Prayer Shawl Ministry Group. Bernie enjoyed spending time on Ottertail Lake with her family, fishing, and knitting and crocheting many beautiful doilies, table cloths, table runners and baptismal gowns for her grandchildren. She was also a fan of the Minnesota Twins and the Minnesota Vikings. Most importantly, Bernie enjoyed spending time with her family; they have many fond memories of being at Grandma’s house.

Bernadine is lovingly remembered by her children, Robert (Janet Burkhart) of Salem, Oregon, Randy (Susan) of Pipestone, Minnesota and Sherry of Pipestone; grandchildren, Caitlin, Elizabeth, Jaden and Jared; siblings, Dorothy Vandersnick of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Ralph (Wilma) Schreurs of Garretson, Mary Schreurs of Garretson and Robert (special friend, Irene Matson) Schreurs of Slayton, Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews.
