Bernard Harry Shane

June 8, 1947 — July 15, 2017

Bernard Harry Shane…

was born to Harry and Margery (Johannsen) Shane on June 8, 1947 in Pipestone, Minnesota. He was raised on the Shane family farm in Grange Township of Pipestone County. In his younger years, he attended school in District 16 country school. When he was in seventh grade, he moved with his parents to Ruthton, Minnesota and attended school there. The following year, they moved back to the Shane family farm in Troy Township. At that time, Bernie attended school in Pipestone. After he graduated from Pipestone High School in 1965, he worked on the family farm. In August, 1966, his father died so Bernie took over the farm operation. On February 22, 1969, he was united in marriage to Mary Gullickson. Following their marriage, they lived in Pipestone and Bernie continued to farm the family farm. Throughout the years, he stayed active with livestock and milked dairy cows until 1997. In 1996, they moved to the Claus Johannsen farm which was the original Johannsen farm. On Friday, July 14, 2017, Bernie became ill and was taken to the Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where he died on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at the age of 70 years, one month and 7 days.

Bernie was a member of Christ the King Free Lutheran Church in Pipestone. Farming was his life, starting with 4-H when he was young. He showed the Grand Champion pig in his early high school years and also showed that pig at the state fair. He enjoyed fishing, often fishing at Lake Benton, but he never liked to clean them. His special friend and companion was his dog Macy. His grandchildren were important to him and he loved to have them at the farm. He also loved listening to their sports events on the radio. He bought his first tractor, John Deere Model G, when he was 18 years old, and he was very proud of his 1951 Ford 8N.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 48 years, Mary Shane of Pipestone, Minnesota; three children, Sandy (Kyle) Swanson and their children, Michael, Jennifer and Christie of Pipestone, Leann (Mike) Bloemendaal and their children Samantha (and fiance’ Brian Terry), Ashley and Shelby of Pipestone, and Tom (Corinna) Shane and their children D.J., Troy (and wife Allison and their children Nevaeh and Isaiah), and Riley of Pipestone; his mother Margery Shane of Pipestone; and his sister, Barb (Pete) Sietsema of Pipestone. He is preceded in death by his father, Harry Shane.
