Betty Sumption

BETTY JANE SUMPTION was born to Herman and Maria (Oye) Lorenzen on April 22, 1938 in Pipestone, Minnesota. She was raised on the family farm, south of Jasper, Minnesota and attended country school in District 36 and then Jasper High School. After her graduation in 1957, she moved to Pipestone where she was employed at Feckers Produce. While working at Feckers, she met Calvin Sumption and they were united in marriage on January 17, 1958 in Lafayette, MN. Following their marriage, they made their home in Pipestone. After Feckers closed, she became employed at Armours, Pan-O-Gold, and later at Jubas in the bakery department. She worked at the Calumet in the kitchen and then Bayliner for several years before she became employed at Lange's Cafe' in the the bakery. She worked there for 15 years until her retirement in 1999. On August 29, 1989, Calvin preceded her in death. After his death, she remained in her home until February, 2006, when she moved into Storybrook Apartments. On Friday, August 2, 2013, she suffered a stroke at her apartment and was taken to Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where she died on Sunday, August 4, 2013 at the age of 75 years, three months and 12 days.

Betty was a member of First Lutheran Church in Pipestone. In her earlier years, Betty always had a large garden and enjoyed canning her produce. She was an avid Viking fan. Her hobbies included cross stitching and quilting. In recent years, she enjoyed doing word finds and crossword puzzles. She will be remembered by her boys as a hard worker, especially helping them cut and stack the wood to keep warm in the winter.

She is lovingly remembered by her three sons, Marlo and his wife Gail Sumption of Porter, Minnesota, Jaimie and his wife Terri Sumption of Pipestone, Minnesota, and Leon Sumption of Ruthven, Iowa; six grandchildren; two brothers, Orland and his wife LaVerle Lorenzen of Luverne, Minnesota, and Gerald Lorenzen of Jasper, Minnesota; and one sister, Luella Haraldson of Jasper, Minnesota. She is preceded in death by her husband; her son, Rodney Sumption; infant daughters, Deb and Jolene; her parents; three brothers, Elvin Lorenzen, Eldo Lorenzen, Verdeen Lorenzen, and four sisters, infant Emily, Alice Portor, Vange Staeffler and Vernice Romeling,
