Obituary for Bradley L. Houg

BRADLEY LYNN HOUG was born on May 24, 1950 the son of Marcella (Benson) and Carl Houg in Pipestone, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed in the Rosedell Trinity Lutheran Church. He attended school in Jasper, Minnesota and graduated in 1970. Football was the highlight of his high school years and he maintained his love of the sport cheering on his beloved Viking’s throughout his life. He always called the Viking’s “his boys”. In the fall of 1970, he enlisted in the army where he was sent to Ft. Sill, Oklahoma for basic training. After that, the Army became his career. He served in numerous locations around the world, including Germany, Hawaii, Ft. Lewis, Washington and Ft. Carson, Colorado. But he always maintained that Germany was the place he loved the best. He had many souvenirs and pictures from that part of the world and proudly displayed them. After his discharge in 1985, he came home to Jasper. He joined The National Guard and American Legion where he was active in Rock County and Pipestone County until his retirement in 2010. Bradley was an avid reader and books of World War II were always close at hand. When he wasn’t riding his bike or out walking the dogs, he helped his brother, Bill and friend, Bob in their antique business. While she was alive, he considered taking care of his mother his full time job. More recently he was always close at hand to help the ladies in his apartment building. On August 29, 2015, Brad was admitted to Royal C Johnson Veteran’s Memorial Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and was moved on Friday, September 11, 2015 to the Hospice Unit. He died there on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at the age of 65 years, three months and 26 days.

Bradley is survived by his sister, Bronwyn (Jeff) Jones of Pipestone, Minnesota; brothers, Byron (Marlene) Houg of Mankato, Minnesota and Bernie (Mary) Houg of Mineral, Virginia; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marcella and Carl Houg; and brother, Bill Van Steenberg; and grandparents.
