Calvin Walter Frank

CALVIN WALTER FRANK was born to Walter and Mabel (Brown) Frank on November 23, 1924 near Doon, Iowa. As a young child, he and his family moved to Flandreau, South Dakota where he started school. The next move was to Elkton, South Dakota where he went to high school his freshman year. Then the family moved to Verdi, Minnesota, and he graduated from high school in Verdi. Cal worked for T.J. Reynolds Trucking and Farming during his junior and senior year. On October 12, 1944, he entered the U.S. Army and served in the infantry during World War II. He trained at Camp Robinson, Arkansas and was then sent overseas to the Luzon Island with the 32nd Infantry Division as a combat soldier. After the atomic bombing, he was sent to Japan for occupation duty until being discharged on Thanksgiving Day, 1946. Cal then worked for Leo Hourscht of Pipestone, Minnesota until 1961 and Donald Willert for one year until he began working as a semi-driver for Gifford Trucking of Balaton, Minnesota for 31 years.

Cal married Ann Wellberg, and to this union one daughter, Lorene, was born. He later married Mickey Schave of Balaton. Mickey passed away in August of 2000. On October 12, 2002, he married Leona Boomgaarden. They made their home in Holland, Minnesota. In February of 2013, Cal entered into the Pipestone County Hospice House where he resided until his death on Friday, July 10, 2015 at the age of 90 years, seven months, and 17 days.

Cal was a member of Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pipestone, Minnesota. He was also a member of the Holland Senior Center, the VFW, and the American Legion. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing softball and going to dances. Later in life, he loved to attend auction sales.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Leona Frank of Holland, Minnesota; his daughter, Lorene; three grandsons; nine stepchildren; many step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Marlene (Lester) Buffington of Holland, Minnesota, Lorraine (Robert) Trigg of Verdi, Minnesota, and Karen (Kenneth) Boehm of Pipestone, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mickey Schave; his brother, Paul Frank; one stepson, Roger Schave; and four sisters, Bonnie Krum, Joanne Mickelsen, Arlis Erickson, and Joyce Kruger.
