Devonna "Dee" Johnson

July 6, 1932 — July 26, 2020

DeVonna Lee (Hind) Johnson…

was born to Eugene and Thelma (Simonson) Hind on July 6, 1932 in Dell Rapids, South Dakota. She lived in Jasper, Minnesota until the age of 12 when she moved with her family near Seattle, Washington while her dad worked as a ship builder during WWII. One year later, they moved back to Jasper where she continued her education, graduating from Jasper High School in 1950. Upon completion of her education, she worked as a secretary in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. On November 11, 1951, she was married to Robert Johnson in Pipestone, Minnesota. After their marriage, they resided in Pipestone where she began working at the hospital in medical records. Later she worked as a secretary for a Pipestone insurance agent and then for a Pipestone realtor. She retired in her late 60’s. On Sunday, July 26, 2020, she was admitted to the Pipestone County Medical Center where she died later that day at the age of 88 years and 20 days.

Dee was a member of Peace United Methodist Church in Pipestone, Minnesota. She was always interested in music and was an aspiring singer. While in high school, she won many awards and traveled to Minneapolis to cut several records. She was also involved in high school plays and she loved dancing. She showed horses with Bob for 17 years. She collected antiques for decades, especially enjoyed collecting dolls. She crafted centerpieces and gifted them to family and friends and enjoyed decorating her home. Dee was very passionate and protective over her family. She loved to talk and was never at a loss for words. She played harmless practical jokes. She loved having fun and was enthusiastic about life. She was a firecracker in every sense of the word.

She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Robert Johnson of Pipestone, Minnesota; her daughter, Kym Todd and her husband, Mark of Cardwell, Montana; three grandchildren, Egan O’Connell, Ashlin O’Connell and his wife Barb Armstrong and Whitney Johnson; three great-grandchildren, Trenton, Clayton and Isabella; and two step great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Wesley. She was preceded in death by one son, Bryan Johnson; her parents; and one brother, Lyle Hind.
