Dorothy Becker

DOROTHY LUCILLE BECKER was born to Cornie and Alice (Tiesenga) Verdoes on December 27, 1925 on a farm north of Edgerton, Minnesota where she was raised and attended country school. She then moved with her family to a farm near Hadley, Minnesota. On June 3, 1942, she was united in marriage to Joe Becker in Albert Lea, Minnesota. Following their marriage the couple farmed for three years in Pipestone County, Minnesota. In 1946, they moved to a farm in Murray County, Minnesota where they farmed for 24 years. In 1970, they moved to Holland, Minnesota where Dorothy worked as a waitress at the Holland Caf for many years until it closed in the early 1990's. She was preceded in death by her husband on April 24, 2000. After his death, she continued to reside in Holland. In June, 2012, she fell and following acute care she went to live with her grandson Mark until April, 2013 when she became a resident of the Balaton Colonial Care Center in Balaton, Minnesota. In November, 2013, she became a resident at the Clara City Care Center. On Saturday, April 19, 2014, she went home to be with her husband for Easter. She died at the age of 88 years, 3 months and 23 days.

Dorothy was a member of the Holland Christian Reformed Church in Holland. She kept busy for many years taking care of her mother who lived with them for over 45 years. She also delivered the Pipestone Free Star to the town of Holland. She loved gardening and picking up the sticks in her yard and was very proud of raising her nephew, Tom.

She is lovingly remembered by her two children, Marvin Gene and his wife Lenny Becker of Garvin, Minnesota and Sharon Kay and her husband Kenneth Blom of Raymond, Minnesota; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Lynn Swanson of Rogers, Minnesota; and a sister-in-law, Minerva Verdoes of Marshall, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one sister, Rose Perkins; and two brothers, Jack Verdoes and Matthew Verdoes.
