He worked on the family farm and attended Scotland High School where he graduated in 1948. He then attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion until 1951. On October 1, 1951 Don was united in marriage to Betty Ekholm at the Methodist Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Don enlisted into the United States Air Force in 1951 and completed his basic training in Lubbock, Texas. Following his honorable discharge he returned home. Don then attended NW Chiropractic School in Minneapolis, Minnesota where he completed the four year degree in just three years and graduated in 1957 as class valedictorian. Don purchased and opened his own practice on October 7, 1957 in Luverne, Minnesota. The family made their home on North Cedar Street for most of their life in Luverne. Don operated his practice until his retirement 34 years later in 1991. Betty preceded him in death on February 26, 1991.
