Gary D Frakes, DVM, 69, passed away on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 under hospice care in Magnolia, Texas. He was born on January 4, 1948 in Adrian, Minnesota to Marion and Marie (Van Hunnick) Frakes. Gary grew up in Luverne, Minnesota. He graduated from Luverne High School in 1966. After high school, he attended the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in St. Paul, Minnesota where he received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1974.
Gary worked as a state or track Vet in many race tracks around the country and spent the last 16 years at Texas race tracks in Houston and Dallas. He retired in Magnolia, Texas where he bred, raised and raced thoroughbred race horses. He was an avid stock market investor, enjoyed keeping up with his nieces and nephew and was always improving his ranch in Magnolia. Gary made a large endowment to the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine to benefit equine research and care.
Gary is survived by his mother, Marie Frakes of Luverne; his brother, Michael (Julie) of New Brighton, Minnesota; nieces, Nicole and Sarah; nephew, Matthew (fianc, Sara); and many friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Marion Frakes; and his sister, Laura Frakes.
