Elizabeth Schmidt

June 29, 1928 — November 29, 2022

Elizabeth (Betty) Schmidt was born on June 29,1928, the seventh of eight children born to Herman and Clara Kohler of Tyler, Minnesota. She grew up on the family farm in Tyler where she worked closely with her father as an outside helper. She loved the out of doors.


In 1945, she followed her fiance, Knud Petersen, also of Tyler, to California where they were married. Knud and Betty moved several times in California, but lived the longest in the town of Selma in the San Joaquin Valley. She gave birth to three children, Nancy in 1947, Pamela in 1952. and Garland in 1956.


They moved their family back to Minnesota and back to Tyler in 1955, where their children finished growing up. After a divorce in 1965, Betty moved to Pipestone, Minnesota where she later married Earl Schmidt. After his death, she moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota to be near Garland and his family. Sioux Falls was her home for the remainder of her life.


She was passionate about keeping her home and its surroundings in immaculate order and worked hard to keep them that way. Her home was her favorite place to be. She enjoyed gardening, baking, shopping, and spending time with family. She attended Morningside Community Church in Brookings, South Dakota where she was baptized on March 31, 2002.


She is predeceased by her mother and father, as well as all of her sisters and brothers, Irvin, Ellen, Thelma, Ceil, Margaret, Leona, and Leo. She is survived by her children, Nancy, Pamela, and Garland, her daughter-in-law, Donna Petersen, grandsons Nicholas (Jennifer) Petersen, Nathan (Cassie) Petersen, Travis Frick, Tyson (Alli) Frick and four great grandchildren Hudson Frick, Noah Frick, Jonah Petersen, and Evie Petersen.
