Obituary for Eva Lu Hemme

Eva Lu Margaret (Mann) Hemme was born on January 10, 1922, to Albert W. and Hilda C. (Wulf) Mann of Luverne, Minnesota. She was raised on the Mann homestead and attended country school. Following her education, she spent a short time in California working as a housekeeper and nanny. She returned to Minnesota and worked at John Morrell in Sioux Falls, South Dakota until she was married. After her children were grown, she worked as a caterer for the Blue Mound Inn until retirement.

On June 11, 1944, she was united in marriage to Melvin Hemme. Together they lived in Luverne and raised their seven children. Their second child, David James, sadly died of polio at age 2 ½ years. Eva Lu was a devoted Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother and Great-Great-Grandmother. Her family was her greatest pride and joy! She dedicated her life to her children and their interests. The family was very active in 4H Club. Eva Lu could often be found working in her garden, tending to her beautiful flowers or in her kitchen baking. She was a passionate Minnesota sports fan and follower of the Luverne High School teams.

Eva Lu WAS A TOWER OF STRENGTH TO HER FAMILY, FRIENDS AND ALL WHO KNEW HER! In June 2019, her family (50 plus) gathered for a picnic at the Luverne City Park. It was a “perfect day” for her as she was surrounded by all who loved her!!

Eva Lu was honored as the oldest living member of the founding families of St. John Lutheran Church where she was baptized, confirmed, married and will be memorialized. On April 6, 2020, she entered Luverne Community Hospital and was transferred to the Hospice Cottage on April 8. Eva Lu peacefully passed away on Good Friday, April 10, at the age of 98 years.

She is lovingly remembered by her six children, Dennis Hemme of St. Cloud, Minnesota, Joan (Randy) Boomgaarden of Zumbrota, Minnesota, Pamela Bindert of Greenfield, Minnesota, Alan (Amy) Hemme of Bena, Minnesota, Gloria (Mark) Aanenson of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, and Robyn Hemme of Luverne; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; and a daughter-in-law, Colleen Hemme of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by husband, Melvin; son, David; son-in-law, Craig Bindert; parents; sisters; and brother.

In accordance with the CDC and Minnesota Department of Health Guidelines, a private family service will be held on Tuesday, April 14, at Maplewood Cemetery, with Rev. Gary Klatt officiating. A public Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date.
