Floyd Johnson

September 13, 1929 — November 5, 2016

FLOYD CARL JOHNSON was born on September 13, 1929 to Harold and Susie (Waasdorp) Johnson on the family farm in Lake Benton Township of Lincoln County, Minnesota. During his youth, he lived with his parents on a couple of farms in the Verdi, Minnesota area. He attended country school and then the high school in Verdi. Upon completion of his education, he was employed on Bill Willert’s farm near Verdi. On August 5, 1951, he was united in marriage to June Frost at the Ruthton Methodist Church. Following their marriage, they farmed in Fountain Prairie Township of Pipestone County, Minnesota. They lived on this same farm for 62-1/2 years, interrupted only by Floyd’s tour of duty in Korea in the U.S. Army. Farming was his love, and he raised grains, cattle, hogs and sold boar pigs. June preceded him in death on February 3, 2013. On Saturday, November 5, 2016, Floyd died at the Pipestone County Hospice House at the age of 87 years, one month and 22 days.

Floyd was a member of the Verdi Methodist Church. He loved to play cards and could often be found playing cards in Ruthton, Holland, Lake Benton or Verdi. He was a member of the Henry Sollie American Legion Post #10 in Lake Benton. He enjoyed dancing and met his wife June while dancing in Hatfield. He enjoyed exhibiting his grains and crops at the Verdi crop show and the local county fairs. Most especially, he delighted in his grandchildren, helping them discover the newborn animals on the farm, roasting hog dogs with them after picking up sticks and letting them raid his stash of candy in his pickup.

He is lovingly remembered by his five children, David (Annette Frappier) Johnson of Ward, South Dakota, Connie (Larry) Rew of Dundas, Minnesota, Tedd (Joan) Johnson of Rowlett, Texas, Kathleen (Kevin) Thies of Arlington, Minnesota, and Glenn (Sherri) Johnson of Pipestone, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his brother, Eldon Johnson of Verdi, Minnesota; and his sister, Marian Carstens of Pipestone, Minnesota. He is preceded in death by his wife, June; an infant daughter, Amy; his parents; and four siblings.
