Harold Winter

April 9, 1924 — September 20, 2012

HAROLD WILLIAM WINTER was born to William and Sophie (Stueven) Winter on April 9, 1924 on a farm near Doon, Iowa. He was baptized on May 11, 1924 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hull, Iowa and later confirmed on May 22, 1938 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pipestone, Minnesota. When Harold was four years old, his father died. He then moved with his family to Arlie, Minnesota where they lived until 1930 when they moved to Cazenovia, Minnesota. He was raised there and attended country school in Troy Township of Pipestone County. On June 30, 1943, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Hauglid at St. Paul Lutheran Church parsonage in Pipestone. Following their marriage, they lived with his parents on their farm in Troy Township for two years. In February 1945, Harold entered the United States Army and served during World War II. After his discharge from the service in December, 1946, they moved back to the family farm in Troy Township. They purchased this farm in 1973 and continued to farm until their retirement in 1992. In 1994, they moved to their present home in Pipestone. On February 5, 1998, Lorraine preceded him in death. On September 4, 1999, he was united in marriage to Alice (Leinum) Petterson at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Pipestone. Following their marriage, they continued to reside in Pipestone. On Thursday morning, September 20, 2012, Harold was taken to the Pipestone County Medical Center where he died unexpectedly from an aneurism at the age of 88 years, five months and 11 days.

Harold was a charter member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Pipestone. While living on the farm, he served on the Holland Elevator Association Board. Starting in his 50s, he enjoyed going south each winter, and he continued doing this until two years ago. He enjoyed working in his yard, as well as golfing, fishing and woodworking. He also enjoyed playing horseshoes at the farm and throwing darts with the church league. Every morning, he would quickly solve the Sudoku Puzzle in the Argus Leader newspaper. He loved to beat Alice at Scrabble (which she taught him). He liked watching cowboy movies. Harold enjoyed life and loved to laugh and have fun. He especially loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Alice Winter of Pipestone, Minnesota; six children, Gary and his wife Joanne Winter, Denny and his wife Linda Winter, and Gayle and her husband Jerry Popma, all of Pipestone, Minnesota, Bill and his wife Val Winter of Glenwood, Minnesota, Tom Winter, and Shelly and her husband Jon Kozlowski, all of Pipestone, Minnesota; three step-children, Keith and his wife Sue Petterson of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Susan and her husband Terry Burns of Richmond, Virginia, and Kim and her husband Loren Mehlhoff of West Fargo, North Dakota; 16 grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; ten step-great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lorraine; one grandchild; his parents; one brother, Edward; two sisters, Luella Johnson and Frances Hess; and one step-great-great-grandchild.
