Howard “Stub” Hiram Reynolds was born to Thomas Clay and Martha (Petersen) Reynolds on May 7, 1921 on a farm in Pipestone County, near Verdi, Minnesota where he was raised and began his education. In the early 1930’s, he moved with his parents to a farm near Balaton, Minnesota and he continued attending school there. When he reached the ninth grade, he and his parents moved back to Verdi. At the age of 18, Stub and his brother moved to Weirsdale, Florida. In April 1944, he was united in marriage to Louise Costell. Then, on May 15, 1944, he entered the U.S. Army and served in Germany during World War II. After he was honorably discharged from the service in January, 1949 at Fort Riley, Kansas, he returned to Weirsdale where he worked as a trucker. In 1963, he moved back to Verdi and continued to drive truck. In 1967, he was united in marriage to Alta Johansen.
