Jamie Winter

September 14, 1970 — June 16, 2018

JAMIE LEE WINTER was born on September 14, 1970 to Gary and Joanne (Arndt) Winter in Pipestone, Minnesota. He grew up with his brother and two sisters on his family’s farm where they enjoyed much sibling shenanigans. They share fond memories of their times together. After his graduation from Pipestone High School in 1989, he attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota and received a BS Degree in Economics in 1993. In March of 1994, he became a licensed Real Estate Appraiser and employed with Winter Realty, LLC. On August 6, 1994, he was united in marriage to Cristin Bailey at Christ the King Free Lutheran Church in Pipestone. Following their marriage, they made their home in Pipestone. In 1997, he became employed at Farmers Insurance Agency in Flandreau, South Dakota as agency manager/insurance sales. Then, in 1999, Jamie started his own company Pipestone Appraisal Services, LLC. While working as an appraiser, he also worked at Pepsi Cola Bottling Company from 1999-2012 and as a Safety Director for Buffalo Ridge Concrete, Inc. from 2012-2017. On March 10, 2017, Jamie was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). From the moment of diagnosis Jamie accepted God’s plan for him. His claim was that he had a responsibility to be an example. He was a mighty warrior in the name of Jesus. Jamie died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at the age of 47 years, nine months and two days.

Jamie was among the first members of Christ the King Free Lutheran Church in Pipestone where he served as a trustee and taught Sunday school. He was baptized on November 29, 1970 at First Lutheran Church in Pipestone and was confirmed on August 10, 1986 at Christ the King.

While growing up, Jamie was involved in t-ball, baseball and fastpitch softball. He was (and still is) known as “10 Baller” to all of his Ruthton Rookies teammates and fans. He was a smooth basketball player and was a member of the 1989 State Tournament team. This team was also the Southwest Conference, District 8, Region 2, and State Consolation Champs in basketball that year. Jamie played baseball for the Arrows from 8th grade on through high school. He also enjoyed one year on the team at SDSU. He played on numerous fastpitch softball teams where he continued to be an excellent defensive player. The love of the game of golf began with his love, Cristin. She taught him how to play (too well) and they enjoyed many hours together on a variety of golf courses. Jamie made a hole-in-one on May 2, 2015 on hole #7 at the Pipestone Country Club. He enjoyed teaching and coaching his kids in sports. He was their biggest fan and was so proud of their accomplishments. There was no greater joy than encouraging and cheering for them. Jamie was all of these things: kind, sweet, courageous, honorable, faith-filled, faithful, loving, honest and determined. He maintained his great sense of humor throughout his journey.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Cristin Winter of Pipestone; three children, Emerson, Logan and Jackson, all of Pipestone; his parents, Gary and Joanne Winter of Pipestone; three siblings, Mark Winter and his wife Rhonda of Suamico, Wisconsin, Kristen Payne and her husband Theo of Burnsville, Minnesota and Lori Scott and her husband Jake of Fargo, North Dakota; two nephews, Drew Winter and Brooks Scott; one niece, Madi Winter; father and mother-in-law, Warren, Sr. and Carolyn Bailey of Pipestone; one brother-in-law, Warren Bailey, Jr. of St. Paul, Minnesota; and sisters-in-law, Wendy Bailey and Chrissy Tauber of Woodbury, Minnesota.
