Joyce C. Matthiesen

JOYCE CATHLEEN MATTHIESEN was born to Christian and Julia (Haugen) Estergaard on May 26, 1932 in Moody County, South Dakota. She attended and graduated from Flandreau High School in Flandreau, South Dakota. Following her education she worked as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell. On March 17, 1953 Joyce was united in marriage to Arlo Matthiesen in Flandreau. Following their marriage the couple farmed north of Luverne, Minnesota and raised their six children. In February of 1994, Arlo retired from agriculture and the couple moved into Luverne. During her life, Joyce did volunteer work at Luverne Senior Dining, Luverne Community Hospital and Good Samaritan Society - Mary Jane Brown Home. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Hardwick, Minnesota where she was active in circle and LWML. Arlo preceded her in death on July 17, 2004. Joyce continued to reside at their home. In 2010, she became a resident of Bethany Meadows in Brandon, South Dakota. On Thursday, October 23, 2014 Joyce passed away at the Bethany Home in Brandon at the age of 82 years, four months and 28 days.

Joyce is survived by her six daughters, Diana (Jim) O’Toole of Madison, Wisconsin, Cindy (Dave) Hubbling of Alexandria, Minnesota, Kathy (Kevin) Van Westen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Linda (Duane) Hamann of Brandon, Brenda (Todd) Teal of Luverne, and Beth (TJ) Travis of Lenexa Kansas; 14 grandchildren, Shaney (Victor Iturbide) O’Toole, Brian (Maggie) Hubbling, Jim (Kathleen) Hubbling, Rachel (Joey Olson) Hubbling, Perry (Amber) Hubbling, Sarah (Mark Romanowski) Van Westen, Justin (Amanda Erckfritz) Van Westen, Brandon Van Westen, Ben Hamann, Kaylee Hamann, Trevor Teal, Melissa Teal, Madeline Travis, Olivia Travis; four great-grandchildren, Abigail Harris, Jackson Hubbling, Tristan Hubbling and Josie Hubbling; two siblings, Delores Petersen of Luverne, and Ron Estergaard of Toutle, Washington. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arlo; parents, Christian and Julia Estergaard; sister, Nancy Johnson; sister-in-law, Ann Estergaard; brother-in-law, Lee Petersen; and a niece, Debra Wiebenga.
