Lorraine Kathryn Kuhlman

February 21, 1927 — July 21, 2019

Lorraine Kathryn Kuhlman was born to Odin and Edith (Johnson) Hanson on February 21, 1927 in Sioux City, Iowa and lived in area towns. In 1933, they moved to Hawarden, Iowa where she started school. In the summer of 1936, she moved with her family to Tacoma, Washington where she attended Zion Lutheran School. In 1938, they moved to Le Mars, Iowa and she attended Le Mars High School, graduating in 1945. During this time, she would work after school wrapping coils for use in the United States Army during WWII. Upon completion of her education, she worked in the public library, Council Oak Grocery Store, and the P.M.A. In September, 1953, she moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota where she worked for Larson Refrigeration. On April 3, 1954, she was united in marriage to Harold Kuhlman at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Following their marriage, they lived and farmed near Ruthton, Minnesota. Harold preceded her in death on May 22, 1999. Following his death, she continued to live on the family farm with her son, Alan. On June 29, 2003, she was preceded in death by her son, Keith. Over the following years, Lorraine would go back and forth between living on the farm with Alan and spending time with her daughter, Lisa. Lorraine died peacefully on Sunday, July 21, 2019 at Lisa’s home in Tea, South Dakota at the age of 92 years and five months.

Lorraine was baptized in March, 1927 and confirmed in April, 1941 in the Lutheran faith. Throughout her life, Lorraine had a great love of music. When she was 11, Lorraine was a member of the bugle and drum corps and she taught herself how to play the piano. She enjoyed listening to Rock ‘N Roll music especially that of the musician, Sting. Lorraine also enjoyed cake decorating, writing poetry, and crocheting. She also took pleasure in assisting in teaching adult cake decorating classes for County Extension and taught VBS at St. James Lutheran Church in Holland.

She is lovingly remembered by her children, Lisa Kuhlman of Tea and Alan Kuhlman of Ruthton; her nieces and nephews; and many other loving friends and family members. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; her son, Keith; her parents; her brother, Eugene Hanson; three sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; two nephews; and several cousins.
