Obituary for Lorraine Scheerhoorn
LORRAINE BERTHA SCHEERHOORN was born to Siemen and Bertha (Bartels) Smidt on April 26, 1930 on a farm near Edgerton, Minnesota where she was raised. She attended country school in District 19 and then continued her education at Edgerton Public High School. After her high school graduation, she worked at various grocery stores. On October 21, 1951, she was united in marriage to Leland “Lee” Scheerhoorn at St. James Lutheran Church in Holland, Minnesota. Following their marriage, they lived in Pipestone and Lorraine worked at Pan-O-Gold Baking Company in Pipestone. She continued to work there until her retirement in 1995. On September 13, 1996, Lee preceded her in death. After his death, she continued to live in Pipestone until June of 2018 when she moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota to live with Brenda and Doug. She entered Avera McKennan Hospital for a few days and then into the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls on Wednesday, May 8. On Saturday, May 11, 2019, she passed away peacefully with Brenda and Doug at her side at the age of 89 years and 15 days.
Lorraine was baptized in May, 1930 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Edgerton and confirmed on April 2, 1944 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Trosky, Minnesota. She was currently a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Pipestone where she was also a member of the Guild. She enjoyed a Pepsi and ice cream, and working outside in her flower garden. Her favorite times were spent with her family. She also loved the time she spent at Daybreak Adult Day Service in Sioux Falls.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Brenda Scheerhoorn and her fiance’ Doug Kilker and his three boys of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; her son-in-law, Dan McKinney and her grandson, Jesse Lee McKinney, both of Stewartville, Minnesota; one brother, Edward (Gloria) Smidt of Pipestone, Minnesota; one sister, Dorothy (Ted) Kueker of Rochester, Minnesota; and one sister-in-law, Jeanette Smidt of Pipestone. She was preceded in death by her husband; her daughter, LeeAnn McKinney; her parents; one brother, Wallace Smidt; and two sisters, Marvella Zarn and Myrna Borman.
