Louise Stegemann

October 6, 1918 — January 31, 2018

LOUISE HULDA STEGEMANN was one of a set of triplets born to Emanuel and Hulda (Koenig) Hins on October 6, 1918 on a farm near Parkston, South Dakota where she was raised and attended school. She was baptized in November 1918 and later confirmed in June 1933 at Zion Congregation Church in Parkston. After her graduation from Parkston High School, she and her sisters attended Sioux Valley Hospital School of Nursing. Two weeks before graduation her sister, Lois passed away. Louise completed her nurse’s training and became employed at Midway Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. On January 31, 1942, she was united in marriage to Fred Stegemann at the Zion Congregational Church. Following their marriage, they lived on a farm near Beaver Creek, Minnesota where they raised their seven children and Louise helped on the farm. In 1961, she began doing some private duty nursing at both Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls and at the hospital in Luverne, Minnesota. Fred preceded her in death on May 31, 1992. After Fred’s death, Louise continued working as a nurse through home health care. She moved off the farm and into Luverne in April 2010. In March 2017, she became a resident at the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills, Minnesota. On Wednesday, January 31, 2018, while at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Louise went to be with her Lord at the age of 99 years, three months and 25 days.

Louise was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Beaver Creek where she served as elder, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and was active in the Presbyterian Women and Deborah Circle. She volunteered her time as a 4-H leader when her children were younger. She enjoyed working on jumble puzzles, playing Scrabble, and reading. Louise loved canning all of the produce from her vegetable garden, and she was famous for her baby dill pickles and the apple pies she baked. She was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Timberwolves. Louise will be remembered for her unwavering faith and as a person who talked the talk and walked the walk throughout her life.

She is lovingly remembered by her seven children, Duane (Tedde) Stegemann of Marsing, Idaho, Dianne (Butch) Hamann of Luverne, Donna (Rick) Zoellner of Beaver Creek, Linda (Dean) Wenzel of Luverne, William “Bill” (Gayle) Stegemann of Beaver Creek, Ellen (Doug) Olson of Beaver Creek, and Brenda (Randy) VanMaanen of Hills; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lillian Fuerst and Beverly Weiss, both of Parkston. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred; granddaughter, Amy Lynn Hamann; great-granddaughter, Ashley; parents, Emanuel and Hulda; two sisters, Lois Hins and Janus (Clarence) Roth; and two brothers-in-law, Ruben Fuerst and Raymond Weiss.
