MABEL MARIE NISSEN was born to Joseph and Elizabeth (Ryan) O’Hearn on August 1, 1910 in Pipestone County, Minnesota. She was raised near Woodstock, Minnesota. She attended the Catholic school at Woodstock, and the high school in Edgerton, Minnesota. After her high school graduation, she attended nurses training at the Ashton Memorial Hospital in Pipestone, Minnesota, for two years and then one year at Anchor Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. Following her graduation on September 15, 1931, she worked as a private and general duty nurse in Pipestone. On November 7, 1940, she married Harold R. Nissen in Woodstock. After their marriage, they moved to San Diego, California where Mabel worked at a private hospital. Five years later, they returned to Woodstock and she worked for many years at the hospital in Pipestone. When she retired in 1972, she and her husband spent 15 winters in San Benito, Texas. In October 2001, she and Harold became residents at the Ashton Care Center in Pipestone. Harold preceded her in death on December 18, 2001. Following his death, Mabel continued to live under the wonderful care of the staff at Ashton. In August 2010 she became a resident of the Sunrise Manor in Tyler, Minnesota where on Wednesday, February 16, 2011, Mabel died at the age of 100 years, six months and 15 days.

Mabel was a member of St. Martin Catholic Church in Woodstock, Minnesota. She was very proud of her Irish heritage. She especially enjoyed dancing with her husband, Harold.

She is lovingly remembered by her sister, Alice Rohloff of Shakopee, Minnesota; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; an infant son, Nicholas Joseph Nissen; her parents; and one brother, Edwin.
