MARLYS DeVRIES was born October 18, 1935 in Garretson, South Dakota, the daughter of Harry and Irene (Reese) Wulf. She grew up in Beaver Creek, Minnesota and graduated from Beaver Creek High School. On March 19, 1955 she married Delmar DeVries. They farmed west of Beaver Creek for a few years, then northeast of Kenneth for a short time until they bought the farm west of Luverne. Here they lived and operated the farm until moving into Luverne, Minnesota in 2005. On Wednesday, January 6, 2021, Marlys died peacefully at the age of 85 years, two months, and 18 days.

Marlys loved gardening, sewing, baking, cards, and crafts. Her love for gardening ultimately led her to starting a vegetable farm, “Del-Mar Gardens”. Marlys’ artistic flare was demonstrated in her many wood and floral creations that she sold at local craft fairs.

She was a hands-on farmer’s wife and a dedicated mother to her three daughters. Never wanting idle hands, she had many occupations such as grocery clerk when first married, dental assistant, vegetable farm, custodian at a local bank, and Luverne school bus driver for 25 years.

In retirement she continued to enjoy vegetable gardening with her youngest daughter, quilting with her middle daughter, and baking with her oldest daughter. Marlys was also a fierce card player. In her retirement she learned to play Texas Hold Em and went on to play in many local and state tournaments.

Marlys is survived by her husband, Delmar DeVries; three daughters, Jacqueline DeVries of Champlin, Minnesota, Jolene (Alan) DeVries-Johnson of Blaine, Minnesota, and Jeanette (Ajay) Hatle of Luverne; one grandson, Nicholas Johnson; and two great-grandchildren, James and Melanie Johnson. She is preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Betty Ann (Wulf) Matus and Marian Wulf.

Blessed be her memory.
