Obituary for Marvin Hamann

MARVIN WOODROW HAMANN was born on November 7, 1916 to Herman and Laura (Koch) Hamann in Springwater Township, Rock County, Minnesota. He attended country school through the 8th grade and then began his life long career of farming. On February 10, 1946 Marvin was united in marriage to Lucille Weilandt at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Trosky, Minnesota. The couple made their first home on a farm northwest of Luverne, Minnesota. They lived on various farms throughout Rock County before eventually settling west of Luverne. During his many years of farming, Marvin enjoyed working God’s earth and was never idle very long with his hands. He lived his life as a dedicated farmer and father to his children. He loved all animals and was especially fond of his horse Charles. Marvin also worked for Meilman Packing Plant in Sioux Falls, South Dakota for a few years during the late 1970’s. The couple formally retired from farming in 1997 and moved to Luverne, Minnesota. Marvin still remained connected to the land and stayed active gardening. He also continued to take concern over the animals – especially the cats. On Wednesday, March 13, 2013 Marvin died peacefully at the Sanford Luverne Hospital at the age of 96 years, four months and seven days.

Marvin was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where he belonged to the Men’s Club. Throughout his life, Marvin loved to garden and enjoyed sharing his produce with others. He loved throwing on his Santa suit and playing Santa at Minnwest Bank and for the residents of the Mary Jane Brown Home where he also visited as a Senior Volunteer. Marvin was truly an actor at heart. He loved writing letters, poems, and skits which he performed for birthdays, showers, and anniversaries. He liked “old time” polka music, two-step dancing and was the author of the annual Hamann Family Christmas card.

Marvin will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 67 years, Lucille Hamann of Luverne; two children, Marvis Mitchell and her husband Don of Luverne, and Lowell Hamann and his wife Paula of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; five grandchildren, Jon (Amber) Mitchell, Jeff Mitchell, Mark (Julie) Hamann, Kevin Hamann, and Tracy Hamann; two great-grandchildren, Samara Mitchell and Benjamin Hamann; a sister, Helen Norris of Mason City, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Elaine Hamann of Luverne. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Laura Hamann; four brothers, Albert Hamann, Merle Hamann, Richard Hagen, and Leonard Hagen; and two sisters, Florence Kennedy and Eleanor Loger.
