Merlyn "Mert" Fey

June 3, 1934 — November 16, 2011

MERLYN 'MERT' JOHN FEY was born on June 3, 1934 to Charles and Hermina (Gilman) Fey at their home in Edgerton, Minnesota. On Wednesday, November 9, 2011, he had a stroke and went to be with our Lord on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Mert grew up in the Jasper/Pipestone, Minnesota area. He was baptized and made a profession of faith in the Christian Reformed Church in Pipestone. Upon completion of eighth grade in Verdi, he went to work on a potato farm in North Dakota. Moving back to the area, he met the love of his life, Delores Post. They married on June 25, 1954.

Mert and Delores started farming together with his father-in-law in Lincoln County, Minnesota. They were blessed with two sons and two daughters. In 1968, they bought a farm by Lake Wilson, Minnesota. The Lord blessed them with another daughter in 1978. Mert crop farmed and raised livestock for many years. In 1985, he sold most of the livestock, but continued crop farming. The couple moved to Pipestone, Minnesota in 1998. Mert continued farming for the next few years with his son and grandson until officially retiring in 2001. He remained active in Pipestone as he picked up and delivered cars and farm equipment.

He was a member of the American Reformed Church in Woodstock where he served as a deacon. Mert truly enjoyed the outdoors which came from his love of the land. Camping with his wife and family brought him great joy. He took great pleasure working with his horses preparing them for wagon trains and parades. He loved visiting and going for coffee. Mert had a great love for life and brought joy to those around him. He adored spending time with his children, grandchildren, and friends. He had the unique gift to make everyone he was around feel special.

Mert is lovingly remembered by his wife, Delores; five children, Curtis (Kathy) of Pipestone, Minnesota, Douglas (Pamula) of Woodstock, Minnesota, Robin Smith of Marion, South Dakota, Brenda Fey (Dale Standish) of Pipestone, Minnesota and Kimberly (Stephen) Becker of Verndale, Minnesota; eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Allen (Chris) of Corsica, South Dakota and Calvin (Lois) of Pipestone, Minnesota; one sister-in-law, Sue (Bernie) Uilk of Pipestone, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and youngest brother, Donovan.
