Myrna Van Voorst

June 16, 1947 — June 6, 2013

MYRNA HAZEL VAN VOORST was born June 16, 1947 at home on the Riffle Place in rural Platte, South Dakota to Ralph and Hazel (Fish) Crosby. They lived at the Riffle Place until 1951. Her family resided in rural Platte throughout her childhood. They moved to the Schoenrock Place until 1952, and then the Weekly Place from 1953-1955, Novak Place from 1955-1957, Kott Place from 1957-1958, and the Dyce Place from 1959-1965. During her senior year, Myrna lived in town with Tom and Marilyn Tatum. She attended school in Platte and graduated from Platte High School in 1965. Following graduation, she attended Stewarts School of Hairstyling in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where she graduated in 1967. Her first job as a stylist was at Park Ridge Mall in Sioux Falls. She married Russell Van Voorst on April 6, 1968 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Luverne, Minnesota. The couple made their home in Luverne where Myrna continued her work as a “hair bender”. She was a stylist at House of Hair Design from 1968-1973, Sincerely Yours from 1973-1987, Shear Reflections from 1987-2005, and then joined the crew at Salon 75 in 2005. She enjoyed her years doing hair but was looking forward to her upcoming retirement in October. On June 6, 2013, Myrna passed away at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls surrounded by her family at the age of 65 years, 11 months, and 20 days.

Myrna was a member of the Lutheran faith and donated many quilt tops to churches throughout the years. She loved to attend Green Earth Players events and volunteered her time as a hairstylist for the productions. She also volunteered with Relay for Life and Locks of Love. In her earlier years, she enjoyed shooting pool and was a trophy winning trap shooter. Myrna was a good golfer and member of the Luverne Country Club. She enjoyed quilting, gardening flowers, a glass of wine, scrapbooking and genealogy, baking from scratch, creating fantastic gingerbread houses, home decorating, and canning. She was an avid Minnesota Vikings and Twins fan. Myrna was especially proud of her granddaughters and loved spending as much time as possible with them.

Myrna is survived by her husband, Russell of Luverne; two daughters, Tracy Van Voorst and her husband Jeremy Kilkus of Rochester, MN, and Vicky Weissenberger and her husband Nathan of Onalaska, WI; her grandchildren, Lauren and Lucy Weissenberger; and her siblings; Lyle Crosby of Casper, WY, Lee (Pat) Crosby of Platte, Gene (Rhonda) Crosby of Stevensville, MT, Wayne (Anita) Crosby of Platte, Lois (Ron) Smook of North Mankato, MN, Glenda (Ross “Rudi”) Nielsen of Missoula, MT, and Willy (Dave) Rolston of Missoula; sister-in-law, Sharon Crosby; and other family.
