Obituary for Nina Case

NINA CASE was born April 1, 1914 to Curtis A. and Doris (Carr) Quinn in Mount Vernon, Illinois. She graduated from High School in Rapid City, South Dakota. She was always one to pursue challenging activities and job opportunities. Her most memorable time would probably have been the years she spent at Kodiak, Alaska before WW II. She opened the first “laundromat” in Alaska after deciding there was a need with all the military personnel and families stationed there. This new business was well received and consisted of a number of wringer washing machines and fans placed in front of huge drying racks. She was a very ambitious woman. During the war she was certified to perform duties in the Aircraft Warning Service of the Fourth Interceptor Command. In 1941, she and other personnel were evacuated to Seattle, Washington. After the war, she was employed at various jobs in Florida, and owned and operated a restaurant in Eldon, Missouri. In 1957, she relocated to Redding, California to help her mother care for her stepfather. Eventually, she owned and operated a Pawn Shop until her retirement.
In 1964, Nina married Lt. Colonel Hershel Case. Hershel was retired, so they travelled extensively throughout the U.S. in their RV. Hershel passed away in 2001. In November of 2006, she moved to Tyler, Minnesota to be close to family. Because of declining health, Sunrise Manor Nursing Home became Nina’s permanent home until her death on Tuesday, January 27 at the age of 100.

Nina was an avid reader until she lost the vision in one eye. She also immensely enjoyed fishing, hunting, shopping (especially the shoe and purse departments), and having a beer or two to celebrate the fact that it was 5 PM somewhere.

Nina is survived by her stepdaughter, Kathleen Case of Sutherlin, OR; sister, Dorothy Mergen of Estherville, IA; sister-in-laws, Pauline Quinn of Evansville, MN and Jackie Quinn of Ventura, IA; her neices, Sharon Jacobsen of Tyler, MN and Muffy Lee of Wenatchee, WA; nephews, Colin Quinn of Bloomington, MN, Gary Quinn and Craig Quinn of Evansville, MN, and Lester Quinn, Hudson, WI; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hershel; her parents; and her brothers, Joseph, Lester, Francis (Bud), and Bill Quinn.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Sunrise Manor Activity Fund or Ridgeview Hospice in Tyler.
