Norma Sabie

February 17, 1919 — April 13, 2016

NORMA ALVINA SABIE was born to Otto and Nancy (Kallemeyn) Meyer on February 17, 1919 in Trosky, Minnesota. As a small child, she moved with her parents to a farm near Trosky where she was raised and attended country school. Norma attended Pipestone High School and graduated in 1938. Following graduation, she began working as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Pipestone. Norma was united in marriage on March 29, 1947 to Curtis Jerrold Sabie at Jasper Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jasper, Minnesota. They resided in Pipestone and had a long and happy marriage for 66 years until his death in 2014. Their marriage was blessed with three children and she was a full-time homemaker until 1967 when she returned to work for the telephone company and retired in 1983. After her retirement, she continued to live in her home in Pipestone. She passed away on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at her home at the age of 97 years, one month and 26 days.

Norma was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church in Pipestone. She was also a member of the Hiawatha Club and enjoyed and participated in popping popcorn and selling tickets at the Hiawatha Pageant each year. Norma’s interests included sewing, knitting and embroidery and she used these talents in her volunteer work with the Hospital Auxiliary of which she was a member for thirty years. She also created many cherished heirlooms for her family. Norma and Curt enjoyed traveling throughout the United States in their retirement years. She particularly looked forward to their yearly after Christmas trip to Las Vegas, Nevada where she and Curt would join her beloved brother, Delbert and his wife. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family, the highlight of which was the annual family vacation enjoyed at various northern Minnesota resorts.

She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Teresa Strand of Big Lake, Minnesota; her sons, Curtis Jr (Camille) of Rochester, Minnesota and Stanley of Pipestone; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Curt; her parents; two brothers, Merrell and Delbert Meyer; and one sister, Naomi Ruth Meyer.
