Patricia "Pat" Edith Johannsen

June 17, 1933 — July 24, 2018

PATRICIA "PAT" EDITH JOHANNSEN was born to Harold and Edith Cook in Pipestone, Minnesota on June 17, 1933. Pat was a lifelong resident of Pipestone where she graduated in 1951. After graduation she furthered her education at Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska, and later at South Dakota State University in Brookings. Pat began working as a telephone operator in Pipestone where she took a call from the man she would later spend 65 wonderful years of marriage with, Bill Johannsen. They were united in marriage on January 4, 1953 and made their first home in Verdi, Minnesota. Though the couple relocated to several residences in Pipestone over the following years, the Campbell House (or the “castle” as they called it) that was moved to its location at the time from downtown, held a special place in her heart. Pat’s love of shopping drew her to a career as a sales associate at Betty’s Tots to Teens and Sears in Pipestone until she and Bill retired in 1991. Together, they spent their retirement living on the Johannsen family farm that had been passed down for over a century. Bill will always remember Pat’s joy while she watched birds and "her" turkeys, and all animal life as they sauntered across their driveway. On Tuesday, July 24, 2018, Pat passed away at the Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone at the age of 85 years, one month, and seven days.

Pat was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church in Pipestone where she was baptized, confirmed, and married. She was active in her congregation by serving as an elder, deacon, and was a fixture of the choir. Pat was an inaugural member of the Al Opland Singers and her true passion was performing with them. She also enjoyed playing cards with her friends and family, fishing and traveling to various parts of the world. Pat loved her family deeply and was always a loyal supporter of the Minnesota Vikings, Timberwolves and Twins, but nothing could keep her from cheering on her children and grandchildren in their sports and activities.

She will be remembered by her husband, Bill; children, Nikki (Jon) Edwards of Edina, Minnesota, Bill (Kristi) Johannsen of Hartford, South Dakota, Skot Johannsen of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Todd (Wanda) Johannsen of Black Hawk, South Dakota; six grandchildren, Mikel Edwards, Kris Edwards, Andrew (Rachel) Johannsen, Matthew Johannsen (Jordyn Herr), Ben Johannsen, and Abby Johannsen; sister, “Muggs” Bunn of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and one sister-in-law. She was preceded in death by her parents; infant son; siblings, Bob Cook, Eddie Cook, and Twila Martinson; and three siblings-in-law.
