Paul A. Jackson

PAUL AUGUSTUS JACKSON was born to Douglas Elva and Mary Christine (Tappan) Jackson on August 6, 1915 in Belle Plaine, Iowa. When he was a small child, he moved with his parents to a farm northwest of Pipestone, Minnesota where he was raised and received his education. After his graduation from Pipestone High School, he worked for the first golf course in Pipestone at the Johnson Quarry. He also drove horse-drawn delivery wagons and worked as a bartender. On October 7, 1941, “chosen by his friends and neighbors” to serve in the United States Army, Paul served during World War II in the Pacific. After his discharge from the service on October 5, 1945, he returned to Pipestone. On May 24, 1947, Paul was united in marriage to Evelyn Mang. Following their marriage, they lived in Pipestone and Paul became employed by Hyde Oil Company, later known as Hy-Pane Gas Company. He continued to work there until his retirement in 1978. On February 1, 1995, Evelyn preceded him in death. After her death, Paul remained in Pipestone. This past 1 years Paul moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico to live with his daughter. On Wednesday, June 12, 2013, he died there under home hospice care at the age of 97 years, ten months and six days.

Paul was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pipestone. He was also a member of the Lions Club and the Michael Boock American Legion Post 6 where he was active in the military honor guard. He volunteered his time as an ambulance attendant. He enjoyed baseball, and he played on the Pipestone Legion team. In his younger years, he coached Little League baseball. He liked to bowl, and he bowled in several leagues. He loved to work in his garden, and he was an avid golfer.

He is lovingly remembered by his three children, Douglas Jackson and his wife Nancy of Longmont, Colorado, Susan Moffat and her husband Jeffrey Vasterling of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Charles Jackson of Boulder, Colorado; four grandchildren, Eric and Sarah Moffat, Paul and Samantha Jackson, and Ivory and Jamie Schwaberow; four great-grandchildren, Emma and Quinn Schwaberow and William and Avery Jackson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn; his parents; three brothers, Harold, Basil, and Lawrence; and two sisters, Ruth Phillips and Eleanor Jackson.
