Peggy Ann Monk

PEGGY ANN (SMITH) MONK was born to Peter and Clara (Munsen) Smith on March 4, 1949 in Adrian, Minnesota. She was raised in Kenneth, Minnesota and attended school in Kenneth, Minnesota and High School in Magnolia, Minnesota. In 1967, she graduated from Magnolia High School. After her graduation, she moved to Jackson, Minnesota where she began working at Children’s Handicap Home and later became employed at Jackson Candy Factory. On July 3, 1969, she was married and then moved to Fairmont, Minnesota. In 1973, she began working at Toggery Cleaners. She later moved to Ellsworth, Minnesota and then to Edgerton, Minnesota. While living in Edgerton, she delivered the Worthington Daily Globe for three years and then started working at Monk’s Secondhand in Pipestone, Minnesota. On September 12, 1987, she was united in marriage to James Monk at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Pipestone. Following their marriage, they lived on an acreage near Pipestone They owned and operated Monk’s Secondhand. She also worked at the Historic Calumet Inn from 1988 until 2016 where she was the night auditor. On September 9, 2017, she entered the Pipestone County Hospice House in Pipestone where she died on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at the age of 68 years, six months and 10 days.

Peggy was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Pipestone where she sang in the church choir. In her younger years, she was a member of Kenneth Lutheran Church in Kenneth. She enjoyed fishing, horseback riding in high school and was an avid bowler for many years. In later years she enjoyed birdwatching.

She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Jim Monk of Pipestone; one daughter, Melissa and her husband Tim Myers of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; one daughter-in-law, Michelle McCormick of Pipestone; two step-children, Fred Monk of Dillion, Montana and Tamara Helleckson of Thief River Falls, Minnesota; six grandchildren, Paul Monk, Rita Helleckson, Trevor DeBates, Zachery DeBates, Dylan McCormick and Morgan McCormick; and one brother, Bob Smith and his wife Alvina of Sioux Falls. She was preceded in death by her son, Rod McCormick; her parents; and her grandparents.
