PLONA CUPERY was born June 4, 1915, to Klaas and Lucretia [VanDis] Verhey on the farm west of Hills, Minnesota, in Martin Township. She was raised on the farm and attended country school through the eighth grade. Following her education, she remained on the farm to help her family. On April 29, 1937, Plona was united in marriage to Charles Cupery on her parents’ farm near Hills. Following their marriage, the couple moved into Valley Springs, South Dakota. Plona worked as a janitor for the Reformed Church. During this time their son John was born. In early 1942, the family moved to Randolf, Wisconsin, where their daughter Lucy was born. One year later, the family moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where their second daughter Charlotte was born. In November of 1943, Plona and her family moved to Beaver Creek, Minnesota. On December 6, 1943, her husband was drafted and entered the service. During this time, Plona and her children moved into a house in Beaver Creek. In 1945, Charles returned from the service. A short time later, the two became divorced. Plona continued to provide for and raise their children. She worked at the Mary Jane Brown Good Samaritan Home in Luverne, Minnesota, at the Beaver Creek schools as a janitor, and wallpapered rooms in houses for many people’s homes. In June of 2006 she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society – Mary Jane Brown Home in where on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 Plona went to be with her Lord at the age of 97 years, 4 months, and 12 days.

Plona was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Beaver Creek, where she was a part of Circle and taught Sunday school. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and crafting and loved listening to Danny O’Donnell. She took great pride in raising her family and doing the best she could for them.

She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Charlotte Buddi of Omaha, Nebraska; a brother, Cornie Verhey of Beaver Creek, Minnesota; a daughter-in-law, Karla Cupery of Fort Collins, Colorado; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and other family and friends.
