Ronald L. Schreurs

March 15, 1927 — September 25, 2012

Ronald Louis Schreurs was born March 15, 1927 to Fred and Caroline Schreurs in Tyler, Minnesota. He is of Dutch and German ancestry. He attended country school through the eighth grade. Transportation to school was either by horse and buggy or walking. During the winter months Ronald, along with his brother and sister, walked across Dead Coon Lake or Grandpa Fred would put runners on their buggy and they would slide across. If they had taken the horse and buggy there was a barn directly behind the country school to house the horses and protect them from the winter elements. When Ronald was a young boy he had a talented dog named Fido for his pet. Fido could walk up and down ladders and Ronald even has a picture to prove it. When he was old enough to drive his first car he applied for his driver’s license by simply going to the local Post Office and paying 25 cents. No test was needed, not even behind the wheel. After he completed the eighth grade he worked on the family farm until he entered the U.S. Army in 1946. He was stationed in Indiana and Arkansas, and was discharged on May 1, 1947. On February 14, 1949 Ronald took the big step and married his sweetheart Doris Zgoda from Ivanhoe, Minnesota. Their marriage was blessed with five children and 55 years of life together. Ronald was a livestock and grain farmer all his life in the Arco area. He was admired for his dedication to working hard throughout his life. His wife, Doris, passed away October 25, 2004 and Ronald continued to live on the farm until 2008 when health problems led him to reside in Maynard with his daughter and son-in-law for two years before entering the Veterans Home in Luverne, Minnesota in 2010. There he passed away on Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at the age of 85 years, 6 months, and 10 days.

Ronald was a faithful member of St. Dionysius Catholic Church in Tyler. He had served on the Cemetery Board for many years. He enjoyed his lifework of farming, playing cards (Pepper), dice, and mowing the lawn. He loved to watch westerns and was very proud of his military service. He especially enjoyed time spent with family and grandchildren.

Ronald is lovingly remembered by his children, David (Kathy) Schreurs of Tyler, Minnesota, Diane (Dale) Lalim of Maynard, Minnesota, Marlys (Barry) Christensen of Tyler, Minnesota, and Joel (Teresa) Schreurs of Tyler, Minnesota; 15 grandchildren, Kari (Jeff) Hansen, Ryan (Jamie) Schreurs, Tory (Jodi) Schreurs, Jon (Jen) Schreurs, Mark (Jennie) Jensen, Nikki (Ray) Klinger, Phil Lalim, Stacy (Andy) Peterson, Pam (Scott) Schmeideberg, Lissa (Josh) Gravley, Kristy (John) Thomsen, Ashley Schreurs, Morgan Schreurs, Brandon Rieder, and Lexie Rieder; 18 great-grandchildren; sisters, LaVaune Thooft of Russell, Minnesota and Lois (Cliff) Haroldson of Red Wing, Minnesota; sisters-in-law, Gladys Schreurs of Marshall, Minnesota, Delores Huber of Marshall, Minnesota, and Shirley Zgoda of Richfield, Minnesota; and many other relatives and friends.
