Shirley Dueland

SHIRLEY MATHILDA DUELAND (KNUTSON) passed away on October 14, 2022.  Shirley was born to Melvin and Lydia Knutson (Dawson, MN) on December 25, 1935.

Shirley is survived by Cal, her husband of 66 years; sons, David (Laurie) Dueland (Shell Knob, MO) and Paul (Nancy) Dueland (Cold Spring, MN); grandchildren: Ian (Julie) Clancy, Lee (Lindsey) Dueland, Clay Dueland (Amber Stein), Cody Dueland (Jaida Kovach), Peter (Tristan) Dueland, Nicole Dueland and Lauren Dueland; and great grandchildren: Austin, Wyatt, Hazel, Paige, Carter, Roy, and Nora.  She is also survived by her brother, Roger (Sharon) Knutson (Charlevoix, MI).

Comfort is taken in knowing she is now reunited with her Heavenly Father along with her parents, sister Betty Dunn and grandson, Dylan Dueland.

Shirley graduated as an R.N. from St. Lucas Deaconess School of Nursing (Faribault, MN). She worked in various positions in Junction City Municipal Hospital in Kansas, Emmanuel Hospital in Mankato, Day’s Nursing Home in Appleton, and finally 25 years with Dr. Keyes office in Pipestone until her retirement in 1993.  From 1959 to 1968 Cal and Shirley owned and operated the Dueland’s Variety Foods Grocery Store in Correll, MN while Shirley worked part time as an R.N. In 1968, the Dueland family moved to Pipestone where they made their home for the next 54 years. Shirley often shared fond memories of her nursing years, camping with family and friends, traveling every summer to the Big Horn Mountains and spending time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed birds, pressing wildflowers, cross-stitch, creating beautiful handmade cards, reading, baking, and canning.

In retirement Shirley and Cal traveled extensively in their camper, making friends everywhere they went. They spent their winters in Florida and summers in the Big Horn Mountains and the Black Hills of South Dakota until Shirley’s Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosis.
