Suzanne Claire Wathen was born on March 24, 1935 to Paul and Mary (Winkel) Meuwissen in Chaska, Minnesota where she was raised and received her education. After her graduation from Chaska High School, she attended Mankato State University. On April 12, 1958, she married the love of her life, Cecil Wathen, at the Guardian Angels Church in Chaska. Following their marriage, they resided in Pipestone, Minnesota and lovingly raised four beautiful children. On December 1, 1989, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil. After his death, she remained in Pipestone where she taught until her retirement in 1993.

On Wednesday, March 5, 2014, Sue was transferred to the Pipestone County Medical Center where she passed away on Monday, March 10, 2014 at the age of 78 years, 11 months, and 17 days.

She is lovingly remembered by her four children, Jane Smith and her husband Philip of Pella, Iowa, Paul Wathen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Lori Stofferahn and her husband Randall of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, and Dean Wathen and his wife Lori of Andover, Minnesota; 15 grandchildren, Josh, Sierra, and Taylor Smith, Samara and Braden Wathen, Ashley Clare, Micah, Isaiah, Malachi, Qiana, Titus, and Bethlehem Stofferahn, and Tyler, Hunter, and Drake Wathen; three great-grandchildren, Elihu and Ezra Stofferahn and Madeleina Stofferahn; and two siblings, LaMont Meuwissen of Sun Lakes, Arizona and MaryJane Mohlin and her husband Mike of Belle Plaine, Minnesota.
