Sylvia June Hardies

SYLVIA JUNE HARDIES was born to Joe and Gertrude (Achterhoff) Elzenga on July 18, 1933 in Trosky, Minnesota. When she was three years old, she moved with her family to Gardena, California where she began attending school. When World War II broke out, she moved with her family to the state of Washington where she attended school at South Prairie, Washington. After completing the eighth grade, she attended high school in Buckley, Washington. In 1949, Sylvia moved back with her family to Holland, Minnesota where she graduated from Pipestone High School in 1951. On December 5, 1951, she was united in marriage to Clarence “Bud” Hardies at St. James Lutheran Church in Holland. Following their marriage, they lived in Holland. The couple was blessed to spend 67 years together as husband and wife, before Bud’s passing on October 15, 2019. In April of 2017, Sylvia moved to the Good Samaritan Communities of Pipestone, due to her declining health. Sylvia continued to live there until her passing on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 at the age of 86 years, 11 months, and 20 days.

Sylvia was baptized on April 9, 1939 in Gardena, California. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on April 8, 1952 at St. James Lutheran Church in Holland where she taught Sunday school. She was also active in the church’s Ladies Aid, Circle, Quilters and Sages. For many years, Sylvia worked at Taubert's in Holland. She enjoyed spending her time knitting, quilting, working on puzzles, reading, and cooking. Her time in Good Sam was spent partaking in BINGO and other group activities.

She is lovingly remembered by her three children, Paul Hardies and his wife Linda of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Rhonda Trees and her husband Marion of Crosslake, Minnesota, and Lynn Mauland and her husband Jeff of Cottonwood, Minnesota; her grandchildren, Daren Hardies, Susan (Nick) Bacca, Angie (Matthew) Kruger, Jeff Hardies, Michelle Ranheim, Jennifer (Seth) Miner, Jessica Walter, Sarah Trees, Andy Trees, Sarah (Bryce) Hansen, and Nathan Mauland; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Henspeter and her husband Floyd of Ravensdale, Washington, Joan Ahn of Monroe, Washington, Barbara Bonine of Holland, Minnesota; sisters-in-law; Mavis Fritz of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Norma Schoenfeld of Watertown, South Dakota; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bud; infant son, David Hardies; her parents; and siblings, Donald Elzenga and Marlene Brinkerhoff.

A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Sylvia's daughter, Lynn Mauland.
